Grolier CD-ROM Revitalizes Aztec, Egyptian, Viking Culture For Children

DANBURY, Conn. -- May 16, 1996 -- Explore what it was like to live as the
great pyramids of Egypt were built, as Spanish Conquistadors arrived in
Mexico or as the British coast was raided in Grolier Interactive's CD-ROM
"How Would You Survive?" The multimedia adventure, designed for children
ages 7 - 12, allows users to travel to three civilizations.

Based on the Franklin Watts book set of the same name, "How Would You
Survive?" utilizes more than 140 movies, maps, sound effects and extensive
illustrations taken from original works to provide a multi-dimensional
learning adventure. The title teaches users how a mummy was made, what
battle techniques the Aztec warriors used and how the Vikings wove their
great tapestries.

"We want to educate young people on how the world has evolved and changed
by showing them how their ancestors played, what they ate, how they earned
a living and what school was like thousands of years ago," John McIlvaine,
vice president, marketing, Grolier Interactive, said. "We hope kids will
learn how these early civilizations influenced who they are and how they
live today."

The exploration begins when a player chooses a life through one of the
three navigational paths. Upon arrival in a world, users can take a
cultural history tour through the era. To make the journey more
interesting, users can access a "survival guide" containing a map of the
region, a timeline describing major historical events of that period and
basic facts about the landscape, wildlife and climate.

Starting in a typical village, players can explore the town by clicking on
objects including boats, thatched-roofed houses and a marketplace, or call
up a screen of options that offers information, specific to that culture,
about family life, clothing, religion, morality, health care, crafts and
farming.

A child from each period narrates the corresponding section, explaining how
users can easily access information that most interests them. Icons
representing the different segments help players navigate from one
civilization to the next, allowing children to make direct lifestyle
comparisons among the cultures.

At the end of a journey through life as an early settler, users can test
their knowledge of a culture and find out if they have survived by
completing a multiple choice quiz with four levels of difficulty or by
taking the Master Quiz of all three civilizations. In the latter quiz,
children must answer the questions correctly the first time to score
points. The final tally of each game lets players know if they might have
been capable craftsmen or possibly wise and trusted followers of a chief.

"How Would You Survive?" is available in major retail outlets nationwide
for both Macintosh and Windows 3.1 formats.
