Grolier Interactive Presents Seven New CD-ROM Titles

DANBURY, Conn. -- May 16, 1996 -- Grolier Interactive commanded a
leadership position in multimedia at E3, previewing a new version of its
best-selling encyclopedia, a CD-ROM cookbook chock-full of recipes from
ELLE magazine, a golf simulation game from the 1995 Player of the Year,
Greg Norman, and three action titles sure to please hard core gamers.

Drawing on the publishing empire of its French parent, Lagardere Group,
Grolier Interactive unveiled "The 1997 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia;"
"ELLE Cooking;" "The Guinness Multimedia Disc of Records;" "Greg Norman
Ultimate Challenge Golf," version 2.0; "Battle of the Ironclads;" "Surf
and Destroy;" and "Banzai Bug!"

THE 1997 GROLIER MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIA

Already considered the most comprehensive CD-ROM encyclopedia on the market
by reviewers, "The 1997 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia" features eight
new topic areas in its "Interactivities" section and the largest
collection of historical, city and thematic maps in a multimedia
encyclopedia. Users can also choose and customize their own interface.

The flagship title also offers users links to thousands of additional Web
sites via the Grolier Internet Index. This feature connects articles in
the CD-ROM to specific, related Internet sites which have been selected by
Grolier's team of editorial experts, drawing on the company's more than
100 years of experience organizing and presenting information for
encyclopedias.

ELLE COOKING

Both novice cooks and expert chefs will enjoy creating cuisine with "ELLE
Cooking," a culinary encyclopedia on CD-ROM based on recipes and articles
appearing in the popular women's magazine ELLE. Designed to help the user
prepare sophisticated meals on quiet evenings at home or feasts for
holiday affairs, the title offers step-by-step instructions and
demonstrates cooking techniques in full-screen videos with helpful hints
from the world's finest chefs. A search engine helps users navigate,
allowing them to choose tantalizing recipes according to available
ingredients or time.

Recipes from 40 countries around the world are presented with full- screen
color photos, detailed ingredient lists and instructions that can be
printed for later use or shared with friends. A glossary of terms assists
with explanations about some of the more complicated directions like
bruising, caramelizing or scalding.

The title's Menu Planner helps in creating themes and menus for all
occasions. Users can select sumptuous Mexican dishes for a fiesta or
choose from All American favorites for a patriotic holiday barbecue.

GREG NORMAN ULTIMATE CHALLENGE GOLF

"Greg Norman Ultimate Challenge Golf," version 2.0, offers the first golf
simulation engine (SIM), capturing virtually every element of the game,
down to the player's swing, style, preferences, strategies and skills.
This revolutionary technology, coming to the market after 19 years of
research and development, includes 44 options for everything from distance
and accuracy to spin and height.

Other golf games use an arcade-style swing meter and rely on manual
dexterity to determine shot length and accuracy. In "Greg Norman Ultimate
Challenge Golf," players click on a swing icon to activate the simulation
engine for shot results that are based on hundreds of factors including
playing characteristics, weather and course conditions.

New to the 1996 title are a fantasy golf course called Dorset Cliffs, a
Lesson Tee with professional tips and more scoring options. With redraw
speeds more than two times faster after shots and between holes than the
previous version, the title keeps players moving from green to green.

SURF AND DESTROY

Imagine if it were possible to dive through a computer screen and embark on
an earth-saving adventure inside the pathways of the Internet. Wonder no
longer. In "Surf and Destroy," players are "transvected" from solid matter
into a digital form that can exist within the Internet's urban graffiti
tunnels where hairy eyeballs, GoonBots and toxic baby dolls lurk.

As the story unfolds, the evil genius "Rood O'Dor" has unleashed a vicious
computer virus that is trashing the world's most powerful computers and
bringing the planet to its knees. Armed with techno- junk weapons from the
back of a fix-it shop, players rocket through the Internet in a homemade
cyber-jalopy battling bizarre virus monsters and demonic toys, all in a
quest to save the world.

Grolier Interactive's real-time escape-and-pursuit-style game is played out
in 18 levels, including seven dizzying "toobs" and 11 bizarre worlds.
"Surf and Destroy" is also one of the first CD-ROMs scheduled for release
using Silicon Graphic's( FireWalker( technology, the premier authoring
system that streamlines the creation of interactive 3-D, real-time video
games.

BATTLE OF THE IRONCLADS

An epic appointment with destiny awaits users in Grolier Interactive's
riveting new battle strategy CD-ROM game based on the famous Civil War
naval clash between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (Merrimack).

Sophisticated artificial intelligence offers gamers a robust first-person
simulation of America's first sea battle between two Ironclad warships.

Civil War buffs will admire the museum-like quality, which is enriched by
meticulously re-constructed ships, weapons and equipment based on original
blueprints and maps from the National Archives, as well as the period
atmosphere supported by authentic costumes, music and dialogue.

Opting to be either the Union or Confederate captain, users unleash the
power of the most indestructible weapons of the day in a re-creation of
the actual battle or in fictional nautical and shore-based skirmishes.
Players who fare well can be promoted through a naval career and may even
receive a personal presidential citation from either Abraham Lincoln or
Jefferson Davis.

BANZAI BUG!

Soar to new heights by piloting the most acrobatic aircraft on earth -- a
bug! From the perspective of wisecracking insects, Grolier Interactive's
"Banzai Bug!" lets players slice through the airwaves in a quirky,
fast-paced flight action CD-ROM game.

Capturing a glimpse into the secret world of "bugdom," players can control
their favorite winged creatures in a full 360-degree cartoon environment.
During the perilous adventure, users encounter every imaginable obstacle
in an insect's worst nightmare. They zip into air vents to flee
overzealous cleaning mothers armed with bug spray, dodge fly swatters and
zoom past mouse traps.

Banzai, the reckless barnstorming protagonist who claims to be "The Fastest
Bug in the West," leads numerous missions through every room of the house
to collect materials needed to complete a secret weapon that will drive
away the humans. With each new room, players are propelled to the next
level where the aerial challenges become greater and the puzzles more
complex.

THE 1996 GUINNESS MULTIMEDIA DISC OF RECORDS

Grolier also demonstrated the recently released "The 1996 Guinness
Multimedia Disc of Records." The title profiles more than 15,000 of the
most challenging feats ever performed by humans, as well as popular
cultural statistics, animal antics and natural wonders of the world. The
latest version adds more than 300 visuals, including still photos and
video clips of unique phenomena, and offers an updated text database,
additional movies, Random Records (a section of interesting records) and
Guess What? pairs (a fun quiz).
