GEMSTONE ANNOUNCES ENHANCED OBJECT APPLICATION SERVER PRODUCT FOR BUILDING
ENTERPRISEWIDE OBJECT APPLICATIONS

INCREASED SCALABILITY AND PERFORMANCE COMBINE WITH RDBMS INTEGRATION AND
NEW ADMINISTRATION TOOLS TO PROVIDE PRODUCTION-READY APPLICATION SERVER

BEAVERTON, ORE. -- MAY 28, 1996 -- GemStone Systems, Inc. today announced
several major additions to its object application server products for the
development and deployment of enterprisewide client/server systems for
business-critical applications. The new products offer increased
scalability, additional production and security features, and faster and
easier development and maintenance of GemStone-based systems GemStone
product introductions include:

* GemStone 5.0, the latest version of the GemStone object
application server with significant performance and scalability
improvements, as well as improved standards support.
* GemConnect for integrating GemStone applications with leading
  relational databases.
* GemBuilder for linking GemStone to client-side development tools.
* GemAdmin for providing system administrators with a new set
of graphic tools for administration of GemStone applications.

With these product enhancements, GemStone establishes a leadership position
in the current trend toward enterprise business object models as the
preferred approach for application development among major corporations.
Customer requirements addressed by GemStone include:

* Scalability to support thousands of users in a distributed
  client/server environment.
* Client independence to allow use of a wide range of client software
environments, including web browsers, object-oriented applications,
  and 4GLs.
* A standards-based server execution engine for hosting and
maintaining an enterprise business object model.
* Integration with relational database management systems.
* Production-ready through support for features including fault
tolerance, security and easy-to-use administration tools.

"Over the past year there has been a dramatic increase in the
sophistication of companies purchasing object technology," said Doug
Pollack, GemStone vice president of marketing. "Companies today want to
implement a shared enterprise business object model and deploy it across
large-scale Intranets. Consequently, buyers are first looking for
scalability and production readiness and then looking at the surrounding
tools. With this round of new products, GemStone is ideally positioned to
flourish in this dynamic market."

"We are seeing a growing number of companies develop client/server systems
using business objects and object technology," said Mitch Kramer,
consulting editor and senior consultant for Patricia Seybold Group. "With
business objects in a three-tier system, companies can centralize their
business logic on GemStone's server so that changes can be made quickly to
reflect fluctuations in the business world. By keeping their systems
consistently updated, companies realize the full potential of their
network investments."

GEMSTONE 5.0

The design emphasis for GemStone 5.0 centered on increased scalability and
performance to meet the demands of large-scale strategic applications.
Additional enhancements are in the areas of security and support for the
soon-to-be-released ANSI X3J20 standard for Smalltalk.

Through substantial refinement and turning, GemStone 5.0 delivers a 50
percent increase over GemStone 4.1 in the number of users that can be
supported on a given platform. These refinements also allow for object
repositories more than 50 GB in size. As GemStone becomes the primary
server execution engine for object applications, the performance of the
GemStone Smalltalk engine becomes of major importance. Through use of a
new virtual machine and new smart native-code generation technology,
GemStone 5.0 delivers a two-to-five times increase in code execution
performance over GemStone 4.1.

Another key enhancement in GemStone 5.0 is a class library compatible with
the emerging ANSI X3J20 standard. This simplifies application partitioning
and migration across different Smalltalk implementations. GemStone 5.0
also offers enhanced control over passwords and user identification.

GemStone 5.0 is available for Windows NT, Sun Solaris, HP9000 and IBM
RS/6000 platforms.

GEMCONNECT

GemConnect for Oracle and GemConnect for Sybase are all-in-one solutions
that enable GemStone 5.0 users to easily access Oracle and Sybase RDBMSs.
GemConnect provides full read/write access to RDBMS data through GemStone
for delivery of three-tier client/server applications.

By using GemConnect with GemStone 5.0, developers can maintain a clean
separation between their enterprise business object model and corporate
data. This provides the flexibility to easily adapt to changes in
hardware, software and network topologies without re-engineering
applications. GemConnect also allows the use of lightweight clients
because the complex business model and object-to-relational mapping occurs
at the server level. Key features of GemConnect include support for
concurrent access to multiple heterogeneous RDBMSs for decision support
applications and support for coordinated transactions across GemStone and
RDBMSs. GemConnect also makes extensive use of GemStone's caching systems
for improved performance in large systems.

GEMBUILDER FOR SMALLTALK

The new GemBuilder for Smalltalk release provides enhanced partitioning
performance and ease-of-use over its predecessor, the GemStone Smalltalk
Interface. With GemBuilder for Smalltalk, developers can migrate classes
between client and servers dynamically, exploit server classes and
partition applications for optimal performance.

With this release, GemBuilder for Smalltalk delivers increased client
independence, greater partitioning flexibility, tools for supporting team
development, simplified installation and performance increases at
run-time. GemBuilders are available for all major client Smalltalk
application development environments including IBM's Visual Age Smalltalk
and ParcPlace-Digitalk's VisualWave and Visual Smalltalk Enterprise.
GemStone also offers a GemBuilder for C++ and a GemBuilder for C.

GEMADMIN

GemAdmin is a collection of GUI-based tools that empower developers and IS
managers with the means to easily and conveniently maintain GemStone
applications. GemAdmin allows GemStone's services to be monitored,
controlled and edited from a set of point-and-click windows. GemAdmin also
gives developers a wizard-like guide for creating and configuring GemStone
repositories. GemAdmin is initially available for Windows NT servers.

PRICING

The GemStone 5.0 product set will be available in June 1996. For pricing,
