PARCPLACE-DIGITALK AND GEMSTONE FORM STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

FIRST WEB SERVER WITH SUPPORT FOR LARGE NUMBER OF USERS IN A
TRANSACTION-BASED ENVIRONMENT

BOSTON -- MAY 7, 1996 -- At Object World today, ParcPlace-Digitalk, Inc.
(Nasdaq: PARQ) and GemStone Systems, Inc. announced the immediate
availability of a highly scalable Internet application server allowing
companies to deploy Web-enabled client/server applications for the
enterprise. The partnership between the two companies is based on
integrating the VisualWave Server product from ParcPlace-Digitalk and the
GemStone Server product into the VisualWave/GemStone Internet Application
Server, the first application server designed to support
transaction-oriented Web applications for thousands of users.

"This product will allow our customers to build Web applications that smash
through traditional user base size limits," said Bill Lyons,
ParcPlace-Digitalk president and CEO. "Objects are the most practical way
to handle the constant change needed to support live, dynamic Web
applications. ParcPlace-Digitalk and GemStone together now provide an
infrastructure that can deliver these object-oriented applications to a
larger end-user population."

"VisualWave is the premier object-oriented application development solution
for the Web," said Bryan Grummon, GemStone president and CEO. "Our
cooperative effort with ParcPlace brings all the advantages of GemStone's
proven three-tier technology to the Internet. This product is right on
target with our customer needs."

MISSION CRITICAL, THREE-TIER APPLICATIONSThrough integration with GemStone,
applications built with the VisualWave application development environment
are designed to support thousands of concurrent users performing complex
business operations with security and integrity.

"At Texas Instruments, we have already built large, mission-critical
manufacturing systems using ParcPlace-Digitalk and GemStone products and
services," said Mark Anderson, Senior Member, Technical Staff at Texas
Instruments. "We are glad to see these two core vendors collaborating to
provide a single solution for Web-based development using VisualWave and
the GemStone object application server."

ONE LANGUAGE, REUSABLE CODE

VisualWave allows developers to maintain one object-oriented code base for
both client/server and Web-based applications. The GemStone object
application server then integrates with the VisualWave Server to form the
middle tier, providing scalability and transaction integrity, along with
gateways to popular backend relational databases including Oracle's
Oracle7 and Sybase's SQL Server 11.0.

UNIFIED SOLUTION

In addition to joint development of the VisualWave/GemStone Internet
Application Server, ParcPlace-Digitalk and GemStone will coordinate
marketing efforts and develop a joint "SWAT" team to service large
corporate accounts with scalability needs. The two companies will also
offer coordinated customer support.

"Today, companies using the Web for client/server applications are often
forced to select a variety of Web products from multiple vendors and then
spend internal development time trying to make them work together," said
Hugh Bishop, director of Emerging Technologies Research at Aberdeen Group.
"With the VisualWave/GemStone Internet Application Server, customers get a
unified, seamlessly integrated solution for their enterprisewide Web
development."
