Gateway 2000 makes CD-ROM standard in portable product line

"CD-ROM's for portable PC's will be a hot issue in 1996"

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., May 20, 1996 - Gateway 2000 today reinforced their
tradition of providing value-packed desktop and portable systems with the
most powerful multimedia functions available. Company officials announced
that CD-ROM's will be standard on all notebooks, including the recently
released Gateway 2000 Solo Multimedia S5-133XL Best Buy. The S5-133XL is
the latest addition to the award winning Solo notebook line of portable
systems.

"At Gateway 2000, it's not a notebook unless it has an integrated CD-ROM.
Ninety-eight percent of the notebooks we've sold year-to-date include a
CD-ROM in the configuration. Thus, we have seen CD-ROM's become mainstream
in notebook computing. This makes perfect sense. By offering internal
CD-ROM drives standard, you can achieve this goal, without compromising
portability," said Bob Burnett, director of mobile systems at Gateway
2000.

According to Bill Ablondi, an industry analyst at Giga Information Group,
Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, "CD-ROM's for portable PC's will be a
hot issue in 1996. Our surveys indicate that among current notebook users,
nearly 70 percent of those planning on purchasing a new notebook in 1996
list a CD-ROM as a standard component requirement. One of the biggest
reasons cited for this requirement was software use, both for acquiring
additional software packages and for personal entertainment."

Gateway 2000 features a modular internal CD-ROM in the Solo portable, which
is interchangeable with a modular 3.5" floppy disk drive or an option bay
cover. The Solo notebook remains lightweight with the modular components
integrated. For example, the Solo S5-120 Deluxe notebook configuration,
featuring a 120MHz Intel Pentium processor, 40MB RAM, a 1.2GB hard drive,
a 39 W-Hr Lithium Ion battery, and the 4X CD-ROM, weighs in at only 6.5
pounds.

"Gateway 2000 provides full multimedia capabilities for mobile users.
Notebook users shouldn't have to make sacrifices in system quality or
functionality because their career requires travel, or telecommuting,"
stated Burnett. "In addition to the business functions of our portables,
notebook users want the personal entertainment functions also. The ability
to play audio CD's, view MPEG movies and enjoy multimedia games helps wile
away the hours in the airport or hotel room. Our multimedia portable
systems are suitable replacements for any desktop, without giving up
performance and power."

The Gateway 2000 Solo notebook line provides a full Pentium processor range
from 75 to 133 MHz, and will soon feature a 2GB hard drive.
