STAR ENTERPRISE TO RUN ONE OF THE LARGEST U.S. INSTALLATIONS OF SAP R/3 ON
MICROSOFT WINDOWS NT SERVER

SOFTWARE RUNS ON INTEL ARCHITECTURE-BASED DATA GENERAL AVIION SERVERS

WESTBORO, Mass., May 6, 1996 -- One of the largest Microsoft Windows NT
Server-based deployments of SAP R/3 client/server software in the U.S. to
date will be in full production in July at Star Enterprise, a
multi-billion dollar joint venture between subsidiaries of Texaco, Inc.
and Saudi Aramco.

More than 500 Star Enterprise employees will use the SAP software and the
Oracle7 database in an all Windows NT Server environment running on a
series of Data General AViiON servers based on the Intel architecture.

Star Enterprise was formed in 1989 as a joint venture by Texaco and Saudi
Aramco to refine and market petroleum products under the Texaco brand name
in 26 East and Gulf Coast states and Washington D.C. The company, which
has assets of more than $4 billion and 3,700 employees, operates three
refineries and does business through more than 9,000 retail outlets.

"Our plan is to use SAP R/3 software throughout Star Enterprise and we have
chosen to use Windows NT Server as our strategic operating environment,"
said Gary Richardson, director of Information Technology Services for the
company. "Data General ran a series of custom benchmarks using its AViiON
servers running Windows NT Server that showed it could be done
successfully in a stable environment, even with hundreds of users."

"Star Enterprise's deployment proves that Windows NT Server provides the
high performance, scalability, security and ease of administration
required of an application server running a critical business product,"
said Rich Tong, general manager in the Desktop and Business Systems
Division at Microsoft Corporation. "It is gratifying to see that our
partners, SAP and Data General, recognize that Windows NT is the operating
system on which to bet a business and work closely with customers to
ensure a successful deployment."

Data General already has installed three AViiON quad-processor AV 5800
database servers with 1.5GB of memory, three quad-processor AV 3000
application servers with 768KB of memory, four CLARiiON Series 2000
20-slot disk arrays and one CLARiiON C100 storage subsystem at Star
Enterprise's Houston data center.

The AV 5800 is Data General's most powerful Intel architecture-based
enterprise computer system, supporting up to eight processors and running
either Windows NT Server or the company's UNIX implementation, DG/UX.

"Star Enterprise serves as a perfect example of how our customers, working
closely with Intel and other industry leaders, today can provide a highly
scalable platform, based on industry standards, for enterprise-wide
computing," said John McNulty, director, Enterprise Server Programs at
Intel.

In addition to installing the computer system, Data General is providing
service and support for both the hardware and the Windows NT Server
operating system.

"We are very pleased that by being able to provide a total `one-stop
shopping' capability, we have expanded the business partnership between
Date General and Star Enterprise that began when Star was formed," said
Joel Schwartz, vice president of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Data
General.

Data General (NYSE: DGN) specializes in providing servers, storage systems,
and services to information technology users worldwide. The company, with
headquarters in Westboro, Massachusetts, reported revenues of $1.2 billion
in fiscal 1995.
