DIGITAL INCREASES ITS LEADERSHIP IN ENTERPRISE MESSAGING CONNECTIVITY

New offerings highlighted by enhanced software solutions and worldwide
services support

ANAHEIM, Calif., April 29, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation, the
industry leader in mail connectivity, today announced an enhanced suite of
solutions that make it easier for companies to transport and manage
information across heterogeneous electronic mail systems. This new
solutions portfolio which is available immediately includes both software
and services, is cost-effective, protects existing investments, and
provides an easy migration path to the newest offerings such as Microsoft
Exchange Server.

Highlights of today's announcement are:

o Enhanced software solutions, including new Internet
capabilities providing low-cost Web publishing and worldwide
access to multiformat documents via Web browsers, as well as
new versions of Digital X.500 Directory Services, MAILbus
400 Messaging Transfer Agent, MAILbus Monitor Systems
        Management, and ALL-IN-1 Office Server.

o A new range of worldwide enterprise messaging services
providing migration, integration, and upgrade capabilities.
These new services include a new program - 'Moving to
Microsoft Exchange' - for customers wishing to implement
Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft's messaging server with
integrated groupware, in their enterprise messaging
        environment.

"We believe that most large enterprises will continue to operate with
multivendor messaging environments for at least the next several years.
Today's announcement underscores our expertise in providing connectivity
in multiplatform customer environments," said Wes Melling, vice president
of the OpenVMS Business Unit at Digital Equipment Corporation. "With our
newly expanded portfolio of offerings, Digital and its business partners
deliver standards- based, enterprise-wide messaging infrastructures for
high volume, mission-critical message delivery."

Enhanced Messaging Solutions

Digital X.500 Directory Services V3.0 provides users with a single, robust,
easy-to-use and maintain directory source that adheres to the latest X.500
standard. This newest version of Digital's X.500 will be DMS (Defense
Messaging System) compliant. It is the fastest in the industry, with
speeds of 10 milliseconds per directory service read, or 200 operations
per second. The new version adds interfaces to NetScape, Mosaic, LDAP
(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol), and other directory service
providers. In addition, Digital X.500 Directory Services also offers
connectivity to ALL-IN-1 and Microsoft Exchange directories, as well as
support for very large databases - containing millions of entries per
server - and usage-based pricing, with the pricing based on the number of
entries in a server.

Digital's MAILbus 400 Message Transfer Agent (MTA) V2.0 provides
connectivity for Microsoft Exchange Server to ALL-IN-1, MailWorks, and
non-Digital mail systems. The new version also provides access to
Mastersoft's Document Converter Library which gives users the ability to
convert documents to any format required by the recipient. Usage Licensing
for MAILbus 400 MTA allows users to control costs by selecting the
appropriate license, based on message traffic level.

MAILbus Monitor V2.0 monitors messaging systems and network applications
across WAN and LAN networks from a central point. This management tool
highlights problems and potential problems before they affect the
network.

With the introduction of ALL-IN-1 V3.2, users now have access to an
ALL-IN-1 solution capable of running solely on a Digital Alpha-based
system. New World Wide Web capabilities redefine ALL-IN-1 V3.2 as an
Intranet and Internet publishing vehicle offering low cost Web publishing
without the need for HTML authoring tools. The new version also provides
MAPI 1 Client support and direct access to X.400 and X.500.
