COGNOS SCORES WITH POWERPLAY SPECIAL EDITION FOR HOCKEY

FASTER THAN A SLAPSHOT, POWERPLAY DELIVERS INSIGHT ABOUT TEAM AND PLAYER
PERFORMANCE

BURLINGTON, MA, MAY 28, 1996 -- Cognos (NASDAQ:COGNF; TSE:CSN) today
announced the immediate availability of PowerPlay Special Edition (SE) for
Hockey, free Windows software available on the Internet for the NHL
playoffs and finals. PowerPlay SE, a multidimensional analysis tool for
sports fans, provides easy access to a season's worth of hockey statistics
and allows sophisticated analysis of the sports data. PowerPlay SE is
available at http://www.cognos.com.

PowerPlay SE for Hockey is a free, limited, personal-use version of Cognos'
Business Intelligence tool, PowerPlay, the world's most widely used
software for analyzing multidimensional data, or Online Analytical
Processing (OLAP). The full version of PowerPlay, priced at $695, lets
business managers take a detailed look at any type of corporate data,
turning facts into useful insights in order to run their businesses
better. The key to the power of both products is the ability to let users
look at data "multidimensionally" -- or in multiple combinations or views
-- much as one can change how a Rubik's cube looks by turning its faces.

"PowerPlay SE turns all fans into color commentators by giving them instant
access to vast amounts of data from this season and making it easy for
them to quickly explore that data, discovering revealing facts about
players and teams that would otherwise be difficult to find," said Alan
Rottenberg, Cognos' senior vice president, Business Intelligence
products.

PowerPlay SE for Hockey will enable users to answer the following trivia
questions and much more:

* How many short-handed goals did Mark Messier of the New York Rangers
score in the 6th minute of the 3rd period in away games played in October
against the Toronto Maple Leafs with Felix Potvin in net?

* How many even-strength goals did the Russian players on the Detroit Red
Wings scored against Patrick Roy in his last game as a Montreal Canadien?

* What percentage of Detroit Red Wings Captain Steve Yzerman's goals were
scored in games that the Red Wings won this season?

"In the business of professional hockey, discovering insights about
players' performance makes for winning coaches and teams. In the corporate
arena, this business insight, or business intelligence, makes successful
managers and companies," said Rottenberg. "Applying the power of
multidimensional analysis to sports statistics is a great way for Cognos
to demonstrate the value of the product and to educate potential users
about business intelligence."

Over 20,000 copies of similar PowerPlay Special Editions were downloaded
from Cognos' WWW site during the 1995 World Series and SuperBowl XXX.
Leveraging its method of compressing the original database to make a
multidimensional cube, PowerPlay is the only OLAP tool suited for Internet
distribution of such data. Other OLAP clients expand the data to make the
cube by adding all possible calculations, making the data too large for
Internet distribution.

Users with Windows PCs and Internet access can download the software free
of charge. PowerPlay SE for Hockey provides a regular season database for
all NHL teams and players. After both the conference finals and the
Stanley Cup championship, Cognos will provide updated post season
statistics at the Cognos Web site.

Data for this PowerPlay SE is supplied by STATS, Inc. (Skokie, IL), the
leading supplier of sports data, and covers a wealth of information on the
offensive performance of NHL teams and players in the past season. For
baseball fans, PowerPlay SE for Baseball is still available at
http://www.cognos.com/baseball/pp_playground.html.

PowerPlay was first released in January 1990 and is used by over 100,000
managers around the world in Global 2,000-class companies. It is also
distributed by numerous software applications vendors as part of their
products. PowerPlay SEs and the full commercial version, PowerPlay 4.1,
require Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, an IBM PC or compatible 386, and 4 MB
RAM. A 486 or faster PC is recommended.
