Next Generation of Caere Automated Data Entry Products Introduced Under New
Divisional Umbrella at ID Expo '96

Imaging Products Division To Serve Commercial OCR Market

ROSEMONT, Ill., May 14, 1996 -- Under a new divisional organization, three
new products designed for the high-end commercial OCR/bar code market will
be demonstrated by Caere Corporation (NASDAQ:CAER) at ID Expo, BOOTH #635,
Rosemont Convention Center, Rosemont, Ill., May 14-16, 1996. Caere's
Imaging Products Division will highlight its flagship Model 2033 bar code
reader, the compact and flexible MicroWedge bar code reader and the Model
1200 travel document reader along with the Division's full line of data
capture OCR products.

Caere has long been recognized as the industry leader in desktop OCR via
award-winning software offerings such as OmniPage, PageKeeper and
OmniForm. It has also provided widely accepted automated data entry and
collection technology. The company's merger with OCR imaging products
leader Calera, an organization with clear strengths in high-end OCR
technology for document imaging applications, helped to create the
opportunity to establish distinct business units that best serve the
diverse needs of imaging and desktop product customers. The result was the
formation of the Imaging Products and Desktop Products divisions.

Officially chartered last month, the Imaging Products Division will
concentrate on high-end OCR, automated data entry and electronic form
solutions for the commercial market. This includes Caere's M/Series
high-end OCR technology along with OCR and bar code offerings formerly
under the umbrella of the Caere Business Products Group (now known as
Automated Data Entry). Caere's well-respected line of retail software
offerings, including OmniPage and, PageKeeper will be handled by the
Desktop Products Division

"We formed the two new divisions to provide a clear internal focus on the
needs of two distinctly different OCR market segments," said Dean Hovey,
vice president and general manager of the Imaging Products Division. "OCR
and recognition technologies can be applied to transaction-oriented
solutions such as those required by the Auto ID market as well as the
generalized desktop market in which Caere is a key player. Recognizing the
important differences in serving the channel partners, customers and
applications of these two market segments, a new divisional structure was
an ideal vehicle to drive our growth.

"The benefits will be clear to all involved. Each Division will have
dedicated engineering, sales, marketing, development and support teams
geared toward meeting the needs of our two primary markets. This will
enable us to work even more closely with our distributors, resellers and
customers to provide the right solution at the right time."

PROVIDING THE HIGHEST PERFORMANCE OCR/BAR CODE TECHNOLOGY

The Imaging Products Division will target its commercial product line at
enterprise solutions providers, system integrators, developers and value-
added-resellers who seek the highest performance OCR and bar code
technology. The Division is ideally situated to provide specific products
for full text and forms processing markets such as medical, inventory
control, shipping and receiving and document tracking - industry's which
require bar code-centric processes, superior flexibility and performance
at an aggressive price. The OCR Document Reader for travel documents from
the new division will be targeted at governments needing OCR to read
passports, visas, travel ID cards, alien resident cards and other identity
cards.

"Market requirements for workflow, production imaging, networking solutions
and the Internet are all driving the demand for high-end, imaging
products," said Andrew Allansmith, marketing manger of the Imaging
Products Division. "Customer requests for new solutions and even higher
performance OCR and bar code products give us first-hand evidence of
increasing market demand. From around the globe we have customers asking
us to turn paper-based images into computer readable form and we are
responding."
