BORLAND ANNOUNCES JAVA ENABLED INTERBASE SQL DATABASE SERVER

INTRODUCES STATE-OF-THE-ART CLIENT/SERVER ARCHITECTURE FOR JAVA AND THE
WEB

SAN FRANCISCO -- May 29, 1996 -- Borland International Inc. today announced
InterClient for the InterBase cross-platform SQL database server. Written
entirely in Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java programming language, InterClient
provides JDBC compliant connectivity software for InterBase enabling
state-of-the-art client/server applications on corporate intranets and the
World Wide Web. Borland made the announcement as part of the JavaOne
developer conference being held this week in San Francisco.

"InterClient connectivity marries the best of the Web with the best of
client/server. InterClient contains both client and server components
allowing Java applets to make direct connections to InterBase database
servers, thereby avoiding the Web server bottleneck for accessing
corporate databases," said Paul Gross, Borland's senior vice president of
research and development.

The Web server is used as a vehicle for storing and delivering Java
applications while the InterClient provides a client/server architecture
-- high performance database access and a high degree of control over the
end-user application interface. The results are better applications,
better end-user response times and reduced Web server and network
traffic.

Building on Borland's consultative work on JavaSoft's JavaEnterprise API
set and the resultant JDBC protocols, InterClient is written entirely in
Java so there is no platform specific code. Organizations can provide new
and updated applications via the Web without the setup and on-going client
maintenance normally associated with client/server applications.

"Borland's participation in the creation of the JDBC specification has been
a great asset to our JavaSoft team," said Jon Kannegaard, COO of JavaSoft.
"Their implementation of an entirely Java-based JDBC/Net driver solution
validates Java and JDBC as a true client/server architecture that helps
make developing and deploying Internet and Intranet database solutions
significantly easier."

InterBase enabled with the Java-based InterClient is targeted at corporate
IS managers who have made a commitment to use Web technologies for
information distribution and application development. It is also targeted
at the new crop of Web-oriented value added resellers and consultants who
are creating custom Web sites and Web applications. When combined with the
self-configuring InterClient software, InterBase makes an ideal companion
that offers superior performance for data-oriented applications in a Web
environment.

InterClient enables distributed transaction processing by both the Java
client and the database server; eliminates the need to install and
maintain platform-specific client database connection libraries;
eliminates maintenance of updating client libraries; and reduces overall
Web server traffic on the network.

InterClient is one component of Borland's Internet and intranet
initiatives. Borland has also announced Latte, a rapid application
development (RAD) environment for Java, which will help developers extend
the value of InterClient with its Java object component model.

Pre-release versions of InterClient for Win95/NT and Solaris will be
available this summer for customer evaluations.
