BORLAND RALLIES BEHIND JAVA COMPONENT MODEL

DEMOS 'BAJA' - A COMPONENT MODEL FOR RAPID APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT IN JAVA

SAN FRANCISCO -- May 29, 1996 -- Borland International Inc. today announced
its intention to support a component model standard - the Java Beans
Initiative -- proposed by JavaSoft for Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java
programming language. At the same time, Borland -- an acknowledged leader
in the development of object-based component development tools --
announced it will demonstrate BAJA, an early version of a proposed object
standard that already meets the rigorous market demands for a
platform-independent component model, at the JavaOne developer's
conference.

As previously announced, Borland's Latte development tool will bring
performance, RAD, reuse and scalable database access to Java developers.
This announcement shows a commitment to a Java component model, which is
the enabling technology for increasing developer productivity by allowing
the reuse and sharing of software components.

"Components are the key to productivity for software developers," said Paul
Gross, senior vice-president of research and development at Borland. "Java
components are central to the design of our RAD development environment
for Java - Latte - and will be a key differentiator between Latte and
first-generation Java development tools. Component-based development makes
objects more accessible to the broadest range of developers by simplifying
the interface to properties, method and events."

As part of its demonstration of Latte at the JavaOne developers conference
this week, Borland will show a platform-independent component model for
Java, code-named BAJA. These demonstrations will show the power of
combining a Java component model with advanced RAD tools.

"Borland's expertise in component-based development tools -- such as Delphi
-- is a valuable asset to the Java community and JavaSoft is excited about
component -based Java RAD tools such as Latte," said David Spenhoff,
director of product marketing for JavaSoft.

At the JavaOne conference, Borland will demonstrate how the BAJA component
model addresses market needs in the areas of:

* platform-independent implementation;
* compound components and support for rapid application
  development (RAD);
* simple UI widgets to non-visual complex remote services;
* supporting active third-party component development; and,
  component persistence.

In addition, Borland will detail its support for integrating COM and Open
Doc component model standards into Java.
