Apple Licenses Natural Intelligence's Roaster

CUPERTINO, California--May 16, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. announced today
that it has licensed Roaster Virtual Machine (VM) and "just-in-time" (JIT)
compilation technology from Natural Intelligence, Inc. for interpreting
Sun Microsystems' Java programming language.

The Roaster VM, so called because it is a core component of Natural
Intellingence's Roaster product line of development tools for Java, is
Macintosh-specific.

Today's announcement follows the April 30th announcement by Apple and Sun
Microsystems that Apple has licensed Java. Last Monday, at its World Wide
Developers Conference in San Jose, Apple provided more details on its
plans to leverage the platform-neutral Java applet environment. Apple said
it plans to embed Java across a range of Apple products and technologies,
including the Mac OS, OpenDoc, Cyberdog, HyperCard, Newton, Pippin and
Apple Web servers. Additionally, Apple and third parties showed Java
applets using OpenDoc running as part of various Macintosh applications.

In addition, the licensing agreement with Natural Intelligence underscores
Apple's renewed commitment to working in close relationship with its
developers to deliver compelling and innovative solutions to customers'
needs.

"As the platform of choice for Internet developers, Apple is focused on
providing the best Java implementation available to its customers," said
Larry Tesler, vice president of Internet platforms and chief scientist for
Apple. "Natural Intelligence's Roaster VM technology, which debuted in
January 1996 as part of Roaster--the first Mac OS hosted Java development
environment--and JIT technology will help us in meeting this goal. Its
high quality and high degree of integration with the Mac OS make it an
excellent addition to Apple's Java technology."

Sun Microsystems' Java is a platform-independent, processor-independent
language runtime system and applet framework for delivering dynamic and
interactive content over the Internet.

"Exceptional tools for new technologies have always been showcased on the
Macintosh first. We plan to live up to this strong tradition," said Joshua
D. Wachs, president of Natural Intelligence. "When the Java language was
first released, we recognized the opportunity to develop tools for Java
that would take advantage of the Macintosh's superior technology.
Macintosh has always been a leader in the creative arenas of the
publishing, education and graphics markets. We believe history will repeat
itself in the growing Internet industry."
