Apple Plans to Put IEEE 1394/Firewire Inside Products

Aggressive Plans for Breakthrough Technology Revealed

WWDC, SAN JOSE, California--May 13, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today
revealed plans for using a breakthrough technology -- invented at Apple --
and known as Firewire. Firewire is the popular cross-platform
implementation of the IEEE 1394 High Speed Serial Bus, an open standard
recently adopted by the IEEE. Texas Instruments, Symbios Logic, Fuji Film,
Adaptec and Sony are all licensees of Firewire. Apple also announced that
its Pippin 1997 reference platform would incorporate Firewire for consumer
product connectivity.

Today's announcement reveals, for the first time, the full scope of Apple's
commitment to using this technology which originated within the Company.
In previous announcements Apple had disclosed licensing plans for
Firewire, but had never discussed its own product plans. As a direct
result of Apple's business development effort, many companies have
recently endorsed the Firewire standard which has been adopted for new
products including digital video disks, digital video tapes, advanced
televisions, set-top boxes, music systems, personal computers and personal
computer peripherals.

"Apple is making a key enabling technology available to all of our
customers. Developers can count on us to accelerate the adoption of
technology by offering this as a standard feature on new systems," said
Satjiv S. Chahil, senior vice president of corporate marketing for Apple.

What is IEEE 1394/Firewire?

IEEE 1394/Firewire offers a fast real-time digital connection for many
kinds of consumer electronic and personal computer applications. The
Firewire standard is the first to permit attachment of new digital
consumer products--including digital video disks, digital video tapes,
advanced televisions, set-top boxes, music systems, personal computers and
personal computer peripherals--directly to a personal computer.

Apple initiated the IEEE standard and led the market adoption. As a direct
result of Apple's efforts the majority of leading PC and consumer
electronic companies now endorse the standard. In addition:

* Support for IEEE 1394/Firewire is expected to be available in Apple's
Macintosh operating system software (Mac OS) in the first half of calendar
1997.

* Developer support and evangelism is now available for companies making
Firewire-enabled products that connect to Macintosh.

* Select configurations of Apple desktops are expected to ship in 1997 with
preinstalled IEEE 1394/Firewire PCI host adapter cards and software.

* Standard configurations of all 1998 Apple notebook and desktop products
are expected to ship with IEEE 1394/Firewire built into the motherboard in
as a standard feature.

"We intend to build Firewire into every Macintosh product we sell. We
expect to make the transition to Firewire over the next year by fully
supporting third-party adapter cards in our operating system software and
by bundling cards in configurations of our desktop machines," said Howard
Lee, senior vice president of the Macintosh systems division of Apple. "We
plan to continue this transition by taking Firewire straight to the
motherboard."

Apple is a co-founder with Adaptec, AMD, IBM, Lexmark, Microsoft, Molex,
National Semiconductor, Seagate, Skipstone, Sony, Stewart Connector
Systems, Symbios Logic, Texas Instruments, Toshiba and other companies of
the 1394 Trade Association and has been a leader in market development of
IEEE 1394/Firewire. Further technical information about Firewire can be
