Apple Announces Support for Strategic New Developer Tools at WWDC

WWDC, SAN JOSE, California--May 13, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced support for more than a dozen new developer tools for the
Macintosh operating system, developed by third-party developers and
announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

Apple said the range and caliber of the new tools are evidence of the
widespread support and enthusiasm which developers continue to exhibit for
the Macintosh operating system.

"The Apple developer community is extremely active, and is offering a broad
range of new tools announcements to support Macintosh development," said
Heidi Roizen, vice president of developer relations, Apple Computer, Inc.
"With the introduction of these new tools, which span the gamut from
programming languages to cross-platform application development products
to programming APIs and toolsets, programming on the Macintosh has never
been so easy."

MOTOROLA

Motorola announced the DR3.0 release of the company's Mac C/C++ SKD, which
includes plug-in versions of Motorola compilers for the Symantec and
Metrowerks development environments.

METROWERKS

Metrowerks, based in Austin, Texas, unveiled three new products including
CodeWarrior 9, a Macintosh development environment for Power PC, a
Motorola PPC Compiler plug-in for CodeWarrior 9 and CodeWarrior for
Embedded Systems. Hosted under Metrowerks, CodeWarrior is a new version of
PortAsm, from Micro*APL, Ltd. for the Macintosh. PortAsm is an optimizing
assembly-language porting tool which translates 68x0 assembler to native
PowerPC code. It is closely integrated into the development environment,
greatly simplifying the build process for CodeWarrior users.

QUASAR KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS

Other releases during the WWDC include a new version of SmalltalkAgents
from Quasar Knowledge Systems. SmalltalkAgents is a dynamic,
object-oriented development system based on Agents Object System and QKS
Smalltalk. Key features included in the netborne version of STA 2.1 are
PowerMac acceleration and Code Fragment Manager support, which allows
developers direct access to native PowerPC and 68K shared libraries. The
new version also provides additional, intelligent, user-interface
components. SmalltalkAgents now supports WorldScript-aware text in volumes
greater than 32K.

WILLOWS

For developers who want to bring existing Windows applications to the Mac
OS, Willows Software has announced the availability of the DR1 Release of
TWIN APIW for the Mac OS. This product is designed to create an easy
migration path from Windows applications to other platforms so that
developers can deploy on other desktop platforms with minimal effort.
Willows Software created the international standard APIW (application
programming interface for Windows) for cross-platform development. DR1 for
the Macintosh makes available the first, non-proprietary Windows to
Macintosh development porting tool kit.

THE LATITUDE GROUP

Of interest to developers who use Apple's MacApp object-oriented
application framework is Latitude 3.0, a cross-platform development tool
created by The Latitude Group, Inc., which lets Macintosh software
developers port their MacApp-based applications to UNIX/RISC platforms.

Applications built with Latitude require little modification to the
Macintosh application source base and run at high speed with native
graphical user interface (GUI) and UNIX system support.
