Apple Ships Enhanced Development Tools, Reduces Tool Prices

Release #20 of E.T.O.: Essentials * Tools * Objects Delivers New Versions
of Key Macintosh Development Tools for a New Low Subscription Price

WWDC, SAN JOSE, California--May 13, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced shipment of release #20 of its popular E.T.O.: Essentials *
Tools * Objects development tools product for the Macintosh. E.T.O., a
CD-based subscription product, has been updated regularly since its
initial release in 1990 and includes tools that software developers can
use to create, debug, and test high-performance Macintosh software.

Apple also announced significantly lower prices for E.T.O., both for the
initial subscription and for subscription renewals--$195 for the New
Subscriber Package (formerly $595) and $125 for the Annual Subscription
Renewal (formerly $195). Purchasers of Apple's MPW Pro product can upgrade
to an E.T.O. subscription for $125.

"We've been able to set new lower prices for E.T.O. by adjusting the mix of
software components we've included and making a set of 10 printed
reference books an optional add-on instead of a requirement, " said Jim
Gable, director of system software and product marketing at Apple. "These
prices are aimed at making E.T.O. accessible to everyone and provide more
developers with the opportunity to use the tools Apple is creating for
users of Macintosh Programmer's Workshop, Metrowerks CodeWarrior, Symantec
C++ for Power Macintosh, and other popular development environments."

E.T.O. includes the MPW (Macintosh Programmer's Workshop) development
environment, the MacApp application framework, C and C++ compilers for
generating 680x0 and PowerPC code, 680x0 and PowerPC assemblers and
debuggers, the Virtual User automated testing tool, and dozens of other
tools. A complete description of what's included with E.T.O. is provided
on the World Wide Web at http://www.devtools.apple.com/eto/.

Highlighted new software components included with the E.T.O. #20 release
are as follows:

* Prerelease versions of MrC and MrCpp, Apple's highly-optimizing C and C++
compilers, in plug-in form for use in the popular Metrowerks CodeWarrior
development environment. Versions of these compilers, which are used to
build very fast and efficient native software for Power Macintosh systems,
are also provided for use with MPW -- already available directly from
Symantec Corporation are versions for use in the Symantec C++ for Power
Macintosh environment.

* A "direct-to-SOM" version of MrCpp which simplifies the development and
use of SOMobjects by allowing them to be used directly using the C++
language rather than the IDL (Interface Description Language) language.
SOMobjects is an object-oriented programming technology for building,
packaging, and manipulating binary class libraries in a manner which is
compiler independent.

* A prerelease version of Power Mac Debugger, a source-level debugger used
for tracking down programming errors in PowerPC code. This version of the
debugger features many user-interface enhancements to make it easier to
use and navigate--for example, it now uses Finder-style disclosure
triangles in windows that display variables and data structures, and code
views have been enhanced to support source code syntax coloring. It has
also been enhanced to allow for evaluation of "SOMobjects for Mac OS"
objects which are typically instantiated by calling object-oriented shared
libraries.

* A new version of the MPW Shell editing environment designed to improve
programmer productivity--new features include Finder-style pop-up window
titles for quickly moving to an open file's folder; source code syntax
coloring (supporting many programming languages, including C/C++,
assembler, FORTRAN, and Perl); drag & drop text editing; and Hide/Show
commands for controlling window clutter.

* Release 10 of the MacApp application framework, featuring a new modular
architecture, reduced memory requirements, improved performance, and use
of the more efficient OpenDoc memory manager.

* Three new reference books are provided in electronic form--Building and
Managing Programs in MPW, 2nd edition, SC/SCpp: C/C++ Compiler for 68K
Macintosh, and Programmer's Guide to MacApp. Printed versions of these
books are sold separately.

E.T.O. also features a new software installer for simplifying the
installation of the major components of E.T.O.

A suite of 10 companion books for E.T.O. is available in printed form for
U.S. $149.These books are also available individually at prices ranging
from U.S. $15 to U.S. $35 each.
