Apple Licenses Sun's Java

CUPERTINO, California--April 30, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
that it has licensed Sun's Java programming environment.

Apple plans to use the license to make Java an integral part of its
operating systems, including Mac OS, Pippin and Newton. Software
developers will be able to create applications that take advantage of the
built-in Java technology. Using a Java-capable word processor, for
example, a student writing a term paper could embed a Java applet that
demonstrates a scientific theory through animation. With a Java-enabled
spreadsheet, a financial analyst could download a graphing applet from the
Internet, plot data from a ledger, and upload the resulting graph to a
network server. Macintosh users will benefit from the wide choice of
platform-independent Java applets available on the Internet.

Apple expects to incorporate Java into its media authoring technologies,
Internet servers, and client software and in CyberDog, its OpenDoc-based
Internet suite. With Java, media authors will be able to use one powerful
language for a multitude of purposes that address the needs of individuals
as well as organizations.

"This is an important step in Apple's plan to launch cutting-edge Internet
products and services," said Larry Tesler, vice president of Internet
platforms, Apple Computer. "Licensing Java from Sun will enable Apple to
make this key Internet standard widely available in its products."

"With the addition of Apple to the growing list of Java licensees, Java
truly becomes the standard for the creation of platform-independent
applications," said Alan Baratz, president of JavaSoft, Sun Microsystems.
"As one of the leading personal computer suppliers, and a household name
in consumer-oriented, easy-to-use technology, Apple's license brings Java
to a whole new category of users."

Macintosh Internet Solutions

The combination of Java and Apple Macintosh computers make for a powerful
Internet development solution. According to a 1995 study by Mirai, a
Chicago-based consulting company, 40.9 percent of respondents create the
graphics for their World-Wide Web site on a Macintosh computer.

A broad range of third-party Macintosh Internet solutions are shipping
today for developers and end-users. For developers, products include
Macintosh Java development environments from Symantec, Inc., Metrowerks,
Inc., and Natural Intelligence, Inc. For end-users, Apple recently
enhanced its Internet Connection Kit, which allows Macintosh customers to
easily access the Internet and World Wide Web sites.
