Apple and Netscape Collaborate to Increase and Enhance Multimedia Content
on the Internet

QuickTime Plug-In to be Included in Netscape Navigator 3.0

CUPERTINO, California--April 30, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. and Netscape
Communications Corp. today announced a QuickTime licensing agreement that
is expected to increase the use of multimedia, video-based images and
digital music on the World Wide Web. As a result of this agreement,
Apple's QuickTime plug-in will be included in an upcoming version of
Netscape Navigator 3.0 (announced on April 29, 1996), now available in
beta for downloading from Netscape's home page
(http://home.netscape.com/).

To further enhance the use of QuickTime VR on the Internet, Apple has also
created a QuickTime VR extension to enable the viewing of panoramic,
360-degree virtual environments within Netscape Navigator. The extension
will be available separately from the Apple QuickTime home page at
http://quicktime.apple.com/.

By including the QuickTime plug-in with Netscape Navigator 3.0, Netscape
and Apple are enabling webmasters to immediately target the QuickTime
plug-in as a widely-supported delivery mechanism for dynamic media. The
QuickTime plug-in will enable a common design center for both multimedia
authoring and playback over the Internet. Today over 20, 000* Web pages
are using QuickTime content, and over 5,000* are using QuickTime
VR--including industry leaders such as CNN, Tower Records, Warner
Brothers, Disney, MTV, BMW and Atlantic Records.

"Apple's media technologies such as QuickTime and QuickTime VR are
pioneering the commercial viability of the Internet," said Satjiv S.
Chahil, senior vice president of corporate marketing for Apple. "Apple's
corporate enterprise customers, such as Atlantic, Warner Brothers and BMW
have demonstrated that when QuickTime goes in, Web hit rates and view
times go up."

"Netscape Navigator 3.0 gives customers dramatically richer content on the
Internet, and integrating the QuickTime technology allows Netscape
Navigator users to view the thousands of Web pages that use QuickTime in
an easy, intuitive manner," said Bob Lisbonne, vice president, client
product marketing at Netscape. "In addition, our announcement with Apple
today underscores Netscape's continuing support of the Macintosh
platform."

Key Features for Web Page Designers

With the QuickTime plug-in, Web surfers will be able to experience music,
audio, video and VR panoramas as they cruise the Internet. The plug-in
allows webmasters to play background MIDI samples and display video or
animations directly in a Web browser such as Netscape Navigator 3.0.

The Apple QuickTime plug-in incorporates a fast-start feature, allowing the
user to experience QuickTime animations, audio, music and video in a Web
page during the download process. Previously, multimedia files required
special streaming software or had to be fully downloaded before viewing.
The QuickTime plug-in fast-start feature works seamlessly within firewall
environments and requires no special server software.

The wide array of QuickTime content authoring tools enables home page
designers to quickly create QuickTime-enhanced Web sites. A sample
multimedia Web site enhanced with QuickTime and a list of tools, tips and
techniques for creating QuickTime content will be available on the
QuickTime home page at http://quicktime.apple.com/.

QuickTime Information

QuickTime is the multi-platform, standard architecture used by dynamic
media software tool vendors and content creators to store, edit and
deliver synchronized video, sound, graphics, text and music through a wide
range of media such as the Internet, CD-ROM titles and traditional
broadcasting.

The QuickTime file format and software architecture are acknowledged
standards for multimedia creation and delivery. QuickTime incorporates a
variety of rich media including video, Sprite-based animation, MPEG,
Motion-JPEG, sound, music, text and 3D. QuickTime has been widely
supported across hardware platforms and software operating systems,
including the Mac OS, Windows 95, Windows NT and Windows 3.1. QuickTime is
an open architecture which enables multimedia companies to add
differentiating features to their products by extending QuickTime's
capabilities.

To optimize existing QuickTime content for fast-start playback, content
creators simply drag & drop QuickTime movies onto the QuickTime Internet
Movie Utility, available from Apple's QuickTime home page. The QuickTime
Internet Movie Utility is available for the Mac OS, and will be available
for incorporation into a wide range of multi-platform software at no
charge.

Availability

The QuickTime VR extension will be available to download at no charge for
Macintosh and Windows users from Apple's QuickTime home page later this
spring. The QuickTime plug-in and QuickTime VR extension currently require
QuickTime 2.1 for the Mac OS and QuickTime 2.1.1 for Windows. Users can
download the most recent version of QuickTime from Apple's QuickTime home
page.
