New Amdahl Open Systems Storage Offering is First to Allow Logical
Scalability to Terabytes of Data while Maintaining a Performance Level of
up to 200MB Per Second

LOGICAL VOLUME SERIES 4500 SYSTEM IS THE INITIAL OFFERING IN THE AMDAHL LVS
FAMILY OF OPEN SYSTEMS STORAGE SOLUTIONS

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 15, 1996 -- Amdahl Corporation, an enterprise
computing company, today introduced the Logical Volume Series (LVS) 4500
Storage System, its most advanced open systems storage offering. The LVS
4500 system is designed to meet the business-critical demands of
large-systems users and is the initial product in the new Amdahl LVS 4000
family of storage products. With the addition of this system to its
product line, Amdahl now offers high-performance storage solutions across
the enterprise, providing businesses with faster, more efficient access to
large volumes of stored data. The LVS 4500 system is available
immediately.

The LVS 4500 system delivers the unprecedented capability to increase data
throughput in open systems environments at rates that will maintain high
levels of performance even while users scale capacity to multi-terabytes.
The LVS 4500 system I/O rates far exceed those of similarly configured
competitive products currently on the market. In addition, the LVS 4500
system provides continuous availability of data and allows management of
the entire storage function from anywhere on the enterprise.

"I am pleased to introduce the LVS DASD family that targets the highest
storage performance segment of the UNIX and NT marketplace," said Gregory
Grodhaus, Amdahl vice president and general manager, Enterprise Storage
Solutions. "This offering fits well with our Fibre 2000 product that
targets our SPARC-based servers, and our Series 3000 storage line that
targets other UNIX segments. By combining these products with our UNIX and
NT based servers, our innovative software solutions including failover
protection, System/390 interconnect, and our comprehensive service
offerings, Amdahl has become a key player in the overall open systems
marketplace."

The LVS 4500 system is compatible with servers running on major UNIX and NT
platforms. The superior bandwidth of this versatile high-end product
fulfills the requirements of leading telecommunications, finance, and
retail businesses. The system is designed to enhance data warehousing and
decision support applications with intelligent caching that also improves
on-line transaction processing (OLTP) systems.

"When Amdahl was designing the LVS series, our main concern was responding
to industry demands," said Charles Foley, vice president of open
enterprise systems storage for Amdahl. "By employing the latest technology
available, we ensured the LVS 4500 system would deliver ultra-high levels
of performance, end-to-end availability and enterprise-wide support to
successfully fulfill all of those market requirements. What we introduced
today is the springboard to the future of storage systems."

PERFORMANCE

The LVS 4500 system provides optimal throughput rates and bandwidth. Ultra
SCSI channels are employed throughout the system allowing up to 80MB per
second bandwidth to the host and 200MB per second bandwidth to the disk
drives for every Logical Storage Module (LSM) employed in the system.
Current products on the market offer only 50 MB per second bandwidth to
the disk drives.

Paired Availability Managers help deliver high system performance by
providing up to 320MB of intelligent processing and cache memory per LSM
along with a host-independent configuration capability for cross-platform
connectivity. The LVS 4500 system surpasses most competitors today, with
large front-end intelligent memory delivering an average of 4MB per GB of
storage.

CONTINUOUS AVAILABILITY

Full redundancy of all active components, from AC power to the drives,
provides continuous data access. Multiple concurrent RAID levels (0,1, 0/1
striped mirror, 3 and 5) provide full data protection and can be
configured to meet user application requirements. All components are fully
"hot pluggable".

FLEXIBILITY

The LVS 4500 storage system allows greater user flexibility by delivering
broad connectivity capabilities and allowing attachment to various
platforms using a standard SCSI interface. The system also lets the user
scale from one LSM beginning at 20GB to multi-terabytes of data all
deployed at a single site.

CENTRALIZED STORAGE MANAGEMENT

The LVS 4500 storage system is capable of managing the entire storage
complement from anywhere on the network, providing centralized storage
management for all LVS 4500 storage systems throughout the enterprise. The
LVS 4500 storage system includes A+LVS, a network-based GUI management
service that configures, monitors and tunes storage performance and can

access any LVS 4500 storage system in the enterprise. The same security
methods used on the network for access to the servers are employed on the
LVS storage system to allow only authorized personnel to have access to
the configuration.

SERVER SOLUTION

Significant in this announcement is the total offering now supplied by
Amdahl. On the heels of the recent Amdahl announcement to resell the Ultra
Enterprise family of servers from Sun Microsystems, and in conjunction
with today's announcement of the EnVista™ midrange servers, Amdahl is
uniquely positioned to bring full high-performance,
continuous-availability processing to enterprise users.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

The LVS 4500 offering includes a full year of Amdahl Premium Service, the
around-the-clock support, 365 days a year. The service protects the
customer's investment against downtime by providing on-site parts delivery
and engineering support within two hours in most major metropolitan areas.
Premium Service today includes installation services such as array
planning, system assurance, physical installation and host connectivity
services. Array Planning assists customers in reviewing the features,
benefits, and the file system stripe alignments to the selected RAID
level. Physical Installation and Host Connectivity help customers with
disk formatting, adapter card and software installation, on-line disk
testing, and system administrator orientation.
