Adobe To Ship Government-Approved Chinese Typefaces Designed By Changzhou
SinoType Co., Ltd.

Mountain View, Calif., (May 29 , 1996) (Nasdaq: ADBE) -- Adobe Systems
Incorporated today announced an agreement with Changzhou SinoType
Technology Co., Ltd. to license a set of four Simplified Chinese
typefaces. Created by China's leading type designers using Adobe's Type 1
format, SinoType's fonts have received the highest level of government
approval from the State Language Commission, which has also verified that
Adobe's implementation of SinoType's designs conforms to Chinese standards
for design quality and completeness.

The set of Sino Type fonts will be distributed through Adobe's OEM
(original equipment manufacturer) channels countywide. The fonts include
STSong-Light, STFangSong-Light, STKaiti-Regular and STHeiti-Regular and
conform to the Adobe-GB1-1 character collection. The fonts are available
immediately to the company's OEMs for bundling with their Adobe PostScript
products.

Adobe's implementation of the SinoType fonts has been accomplished by using
Adobe's advance hinting technology in the new CID (Character
Identifier)-keyed format. CID fonts, a recent extension to the Adobe Type
1 format, are an open standard that facilitates the encoding and packaging
of multiple byte character sets.

CID fonts offer many benefits over other outline font technologies: Support
for multiple character collections and encodings, cross-platform
compatibility, reduced file size, flexibility for adding character and
encodings and creating rearranged fonts, plus advanced typographic
capabilities (such as alternative glyphs and metrics, conversion between
Simplified and Traditional characters, etc.). Additional benefits include
optimal performance in the latest generation of Adobe PostScript
interpreters, an open standard with 44 font developers signed up
worldwide, support for copy protection (to protect the investment of
Chinese font developers) and support for printer-resident and after-market
downloadable fonts. For Immediate Release For more information Please
