Adobe Systems Acquires Ares Software

Font compression technology to further enhance Adobe PostScript printers

Mountain View, Calif., (May 20, 1996) (Nasdaq: ADBE) -- Adobe Systems
Incorporated today announced it has completed its acquisition of Ares
Software Corporation, strengthening its position as a leading provider of
printing system solutions. Ares Software is a privately-held developer of
Chameleon font compression technology and related award winning retail
products. Adobe plans to integrate Ares technology into Adobe PostScript
technology and offer it to Adobe's sixty-five printer manufacturers for
use in printer system solutions. Terms of the agreement were not
disclosed.

"With Ares font compression technology, we can offer our printer
manufacturers a low cost solution for including hundreds of fonts in their
Adobe PostScript printers without compromising printer performance," said
Fred Schwedner, senior vice president and general manager of Adobe's
Printing and Systems Group. "Users are increasingly printing more complex
and visually rich documents, such as content on the Internet, and need
fast, robust printing capabilities. By combining the worldwide standard
imaging language, Adobe PostScript, and superior font compression
technology from Ares, we are confident that our OEM customers will
continue to develop and deliver best in class printer products to end
users."

Since its introduction in 1985, Adobe PostScript software helped spawn the
desktop publishing revolution and has become the standard imaging language
in printers offering the highest quality output, cross platform
compatibility and top performance. By reducing ROM requirements, Ares font
compression and substitution technology will allow Adobe PostScript
printer manufacturers to substantially expand embedded font sets for their
customers at a low cost. In addition to Adobe Type Manager (ATM) which
supports the Adobe Type library of more than 2,500 typefaces, consumers
using Adobe PostScript printers with Ares font compression technology will
have the capability to print more typographically rich documents with an
unprecedented embedded font set. Ares font compression technology embedded
in Adobe PostScript printers will provide consumers with an even more
robust printing solution. For Immediate Release For more information Please

"Ares pioneered font compression technology and has continually strived to
improve and bring new levels of compression to fonts. We are excited to be
part of Adobe and look forward to making an impact in future generations
of printer products," said Russ McCann, president and CEO of Ares Software
Corp. "Ares technology coupled with Adobe PostScript will bring superior
flexibility and font compression to printer manufacturers, and ultimately
provide customers with groundbreaking printing solutions."

Ares developed and published several leading font management and utility
software applications. Adobe will offer continued support to all
registered users of Ares' retail products for one year. Future plans for
these products will be announced at a later date.
