Adobe Systems Announces Support for Microsoft ActiveX Technology

Leading Applications from Adobe to Incorporate New Technology for the
Microsoft Internet Platform

SAN FRANCISCO, (May 7, 1996)(Nasdaq: ADBE) -- Adobe Systems Incorporated
today announced intentions to incorporate Microsoft's ActiveX technology
into future versions of Adobe's industry-leading tools for creating and
distributing graphically-rich documents over the Internet. Adobe intends
to support ActiveX in a forthcoming version of the HTML authoring tool,
Adobe PageMill. Additionally, Adobe has agreed to develop, distribute and
support ActiveX Documents and ActiveX Controls to provide viewer support
for Adobe products that output to the Portable Document Format (PDF).

"We are delighted with this cooperative partnership with Adobe that brings
the rich, interactive features of ActiveX to the desktop publishing
market," said Brad Chase, general manager of Microsoft's Internet Platform
Tools Division. "Adobe's commitment to extend ActiveX technology to their
Macintosh and Windows publishing tools reinforces our common goal to
provide a more accessible and interactive experience for Internet users."

Adobe plans to host ActiveX Controls -- modular application objects that
allow developers to easily compose text, graphics, movies and more into
HTML documents -- in a future version of Adobe PageMill for Windows and in
other HTML authoring tools from Adobe. Adobe has also committed to
developing ActiveX Viewers that will allow users to view various file
formats on the World Wide Web without requiring the original application
to be resident on the local hard drive. Forthcoming plans include ActiveX
Viewer support in future releases of Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe
Illustrator and other Adobe products.

Using ActiveX Controls and ActiveX Documents, Adobe will enable PDF files
to be rendered directly within the Internet Explorer 3.0 application
window without having to launch Acrobat software as a separate helper
application.

Additionally, the hypertext linking and interactive capabilities of PDF
files will be retained within Internet Explorer 3.0 using OLE
technologies.

"The componentized architecture of ActiveX makes it easier for content
creators to repurpose content for the Internet," said John Kunze, vice
president of graphics and publishing products at Adobe Systems. "By
integrating this technology into future Adobe applications we'll enhance
the viewing experience for end users, making Web content more accessible
overall."

Adobe also intends to support Microsoft ActiveMovie, another member of the
ActiveX family, through Adobe Premiere, the leading desktop non-linear
video editing application.
