Adaptec Throws Full Support Behind WinSock 2 and Mac OS with XTI
Extensions

STANDARDS WILL SPEED DEVELOPMENT OF NATIVE ATM APPLICATIONS

MILPITAS, CALIF, - May 20, 1996 - Adaptec, Inc. has announced its
endorsement of WinSock 2 and Mac OS with XTI extensions, software
standards that allow developers to create native ATM applications capable
of exploiting ATM's technological advantages. By providing software
support for native ATM in both PC- and Macintosh-based systems, Adaptec
seeks to encourage the development of ATM applications now. WinSock 2 and
Mac OS with XTI extensions complement Adaptec's software development
efforts for PCI, UNIX, and LAN Emulation.

"Native ATM will enable incredible networked multimedia applications," said
Gary Law, vice president of marketing for Adaptec's INTO business unit.
"Our support for WinSock 2 and Mac OS with XTI extensions will make it
easier for developers to write those ATM applications. Networked customers
are already demanding the power and quality of service that only ATM can
provide. We want developers to be well prepared to meet that demand."

"Apple is very pleased and excited to have Adaptec's ATM cards available on
the Macintosh. ATM protocols and native applications are of great interest
to our publishing and multimedia customers," said David Singer, manager of
communications software of Apple's Communications Products and
Technologies Group. "These industries, and other customers that typically
transfer very large amounts of data, have recognized the benefits that ATM
provides. Macintosh software developers now have a standard ATM layer from
Apple that gives access through normal protocols and provides an API with
which to create applications that take advantage of the bandwidth and
unique characteristics of ATM."

"Intel is pleased that Adaptec is joining with other leading ATM vendors in
building upon WinSock 2's support for native ATM services," said David B.
Andersen, principle engineer at Intel Architecture Labs. "With WinSock 2,
applications written to the standard networking interface for Windows can
detect and utilize the QoS capabilities of ATM networks. Adaptec's
announcement underscores the commitment within the ATM industry to act on
the ATM Forum's recent endorsement of WinSock 2."
