Xylan extends OmniSwitch and PizzaSwitch routing to IPX

XYLAN HAS PUT IPX ROUTING CAPABILITY INTO ITS OMNISWITCH AND PIZZASWITCH
FAMILIES OF SWITCHING PRODUCTS.

Calabasas, California, April 17, 1996 -- IPX routing is needed to
interconnect LANs that use Novell's NetWare protocol stack. The new IPX
router function in the Xylan products forwards IPX frames between NetWare
networks. Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) and the forwarding of Novell
NetBIOS frames carried within IPX frames is included.

IPX routing complements Xylan's existing TCP/IP routing capability. Between
them, IP and IPX cover the great majority of installed networks.

Routing is a natural extension of AutoTracker, Xylan's powerful virtual LAN
capability. Xylan's products switch within virtual LANs and route between
them. Any OmniSwitch or PizzaSwitch can contain multiple IPX routing
processes, and any IPX routing process connects virtual LANs. Combining
routing and switching in a single networking tool eliminates the need for
complex virtual LAN trunk interfaces. And, since the OmniSwitch and
PizzaSwitch are inexpensive network building blocks that can replace hubs,
the aggregate routing power in a Xylan network becomes very large.

The new IPX routing function (including RIP and SAP) builds and maintains
an IPX routing table capable of supporting a minimum of 2,000 routes and
2,000 server entries. There is also a fast-path cached routing mechanism.
The OmniSwitch and PizzaSwitch support both dynamic and static routing.

Xylan's IPX routing supports token ring source route capability.

IPX routing is available now. The feature is included in the price of the
standard OmniSwitch software.

Headquartered in Calabasas, California, Xylan Corporation is a leading
provider of high-bandwidth switching systems that enhance the performance
of existing local area networks and facilitate migration to next
generation networking technologies such as ATM. Its OmniSwitch and
PizzaSwitch products connect Ethernet, token ring, FDDI, CDDI, 100BaseT,
and ATM, at wire-speed, with automatic any-to-any translation. Low cost is
coupled with powerful software features, including: AutoTracker virtual
LANs; ATM PVCs, SVCs, and LAN Emulation; IP and IPX routing; and graphical
network management on a broad set of standard management platforms. Xylan
provides a wide range of platforms, all of which use the same hardware
technologies and run the same code. Extensive redundancy and reliability
features are integrated into the products. Xylan anticipates that
OmniCell, Xylan's cell switching capability, will be integrated into the
OmniSwitch backplane in the first half of 1996 and that modules to support
25Mbps, OC-3, and OC-12 rates will be available in the second half of
1996. Xylan anticipates that the OmniSwitch with OmniCell will be both a
powerful backbone ATM switch and a cost-effective ATM desktop switch.
