Visigenic Software Provides Enabling Products for Java to Access
Enterprise-wide SQL Databases

SAN MATEO, CALIF., -- APRIL 1 , 1996 -- Visigenic Software, Inc., the
industry experts in cross-platform database connectivity, today announced
two solutions to support distributed client/server data access for Java
Development Environments, applications and applets. Visigenic OpenChannel
Client for Java and the Visigenic JDBC to ODBC Interface will extend the
use of existing enterprise databases for the new class of JDBC enabled
applications. These products, announced in conjuction with Visigenic's
release of its new OpenChannel architecture, provide access to remote
databases via the Internet and private TCP/IP-based networks by using a
true client/server architecture which supports full, industry standard
ODBC functionality.

"The massive growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web requires a
database protocol that will allow client/server database applications to
function across the Internet with the same functionality and ease of use
as traditional client/server applications in the enterprise today, " said
Bob Perreault, vice-president of product development at Visigenic. "The
current solutions for the Internet and the Web enable applications that
support static text and graphics. Java has introduced the development of
interactive applications across the Internet but until recently has had no
integrated support for database connectivity. With Visigenic's new
products you can now access enterprise information stored in databases via
the Internet. The access is directly under the control of the Java
application logic, and does not rely on static HTML representations of the
data, as assembled by slow CGI servers."

"Sun fully endorses Visigenic's OpenChannel Client for Java which is built
on the JDBC standard for accessing databases. OpenChannel Client will help
provide Internet and intranet developers the database connectivity they
require, " said Jeff Siegel, group manager, business development at
JavaSoft. "JavaSoft is very pleased to work with Visigenic to develop the
World Wide Web as a corporate information and application platform."

Visigenic OpenChannel Client for Java

Visigenic is extending the capabilities of its new database application
connectivity architecture, OpenChannel, and now supports the Java
Programming Language Environment. OpenChannel for Java enables interactive
applications across the Internet, allowing users to interactively work
with remote data. This allows for all the dynamic functionality that users
are accustomed to with existing client/server applications, such as Visual
Basic and PowerBuilder. The integration of OpenChannel and Java provide
the first truly distributed and interactive database application
environment on the Internet.

The existing HTML, text-oriented environment is not designed for
distributed computing. The OpenChannel architecture eliminates the need to
communicate through a Web server that passes the request to a CGI gateway,
which then accesses the database, synthesizes the HTML document and then
passes it back through the Web server. The OpenChannel Client for Java
passes the request directly to an OpenChannel Server that resides on the
platform where the database is located, eliminating unnecessary layers and
format conversion.

OpenChannel Client for Java is written completely in Java this allows it to
integrate with Java environments that are portable and architecturally
neutral as well as maintain the security features of Java that prevent
unauthorized access and virus invasion. OpenChannel Client for Java
provides a standard for database access for any Java applet, application
or development environment, such as recently announced tools from Symantec
and Borland. Combined, the OpenChannel Client for Java and the OpenChannel
Client for ODBC, provide a single, standard database connectivity solution
for all data sources in the enterprise whether accessed from Java applets,
through Web pages, or typical client/server tools such as Visual Basic.

Visigenic JDBC to ODBC Interface

Visigenic also announced today a JDBC To ODBC Interface. The JDBC API is
JavaSoft's specification for database access by Java applications and
applets. The Visigenic product provides a bridge between Java applications
written to the JDBC API and existing ODBC drivers that are available
today. This leverages the existing installed base of ODBC drivers and
applications and provides a consistent way for all applications to access
enterprise data via a single, standard method.

With the announcement of these two products, Visigenic is providing the
flexibility and choice for organizations that are designing and deploying
database applications across the Internet and corporate intranets.

Pricing and Availability

The OpenChannel Client for Java and JDBC to ODBC Interface will be released
in parallel to the final release of JavaSoft's JDBC API specification and
platform support. Pricing will be available at that time.
