HIGHEST-PERFORMING SEQUENTIAL ICP-AES TEAMS WITH WINDOWS 95

PALO ALTO, Calif., - April 1, 1996 - Varian introduces a new sequential ICP
atomic emission spectrometer which delivers the industry's best
performance for the analysis of difficult samples, and includes
multi-tasking software based on the Windows 95 operating system.

The Liberty Series II easily analyzes difficult organic solvents, such as
methanol, without dilution, and improves detection limits by 50% over its
predecessor.

Varian's new Plasma96 software employs a unique, easy-to-use worksheet
concept modeled on an analyst's workbook. From the central worksheet,
users can rapidly access all results and graphics during the fully
automated analysis. The worksheet can also be used to quickly customize
reports from stored data or select subsets of elements for analysis.

Available as an upgrade to the hundreds of Liberty ICP users worldwide,
Plasma96 software permits urgent samples to be easily inserted into an
automatic sequence for rapid analysis, and includes extensive quality
control, data reporting, and export options. The Windows 95 operating
system allows several programs to run simultaneously, features advanced
networking capabilities, and is compatible with a range of Windows and DOS
products.

The new Liberty Series II ICP-AES is available in three versions, offering
solutions to a broad range of customer needs from the determination of
sulfur and phosphorus with an axially viewed plasma or vacuum path optical
system to routine multi-element analysis for the environmental, chemical,
and petrochemical industries.
