First integrated NT Server remote access solution exhibited by U.S.
Robotics and Microsoft; U.S. Robotics blends remote access and server
technology; exhibits "next-generation" remote access with Microsoft

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1996--At this week's Networld+Interop,
U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ: USRX) and Microsoft will exhibit the first Windows
NT Server integrated into a remote access server. By adding an NT Server
into its Total Control Enterprise Network Hub, U.S. Robotics will
integrate applications such as Web or "Intranet" servers, mail servers and
database servers, taking advantage of the power of NT for these and other
applications. The resulting solution will improve remote access
performance, decrease network traffic and increase security.

This integrated solution will be the first to provide the power and scale
that large organizations and enterprise networks need for remote access to
NT services in a single chassis. Additionally, it expands the Enterprise
Network Hub's capabilities into a new set of applications, allowing
companies to extend their use of the product into new areas and streamline
existing applications.

U.S. Robotics' Total Control Enterprise Network Hub with integrated NT
Server capabilities will enable network managers to take full advantage of
Microsoft's RAS (Remote Access Services) capabilities without the
difficulty of cabling together remote access server ports and NT Server
equipment.

"We are pleased to have worked with U.S. Robotics on this exciting
integration of technologies," said Mike Nash, Group Product Manager for
Windows NT Server, Microsoft Corporation. "A Windows NT Server-based Total
Control Enterprise Network Hub will help reduce the cost of ownership to
customers."

"NT provides a powerful platform for integrating a variety of applications
directly into our Total Control Enterprise Network Hub -- such as
integrated Web servers, Intranet servers, fax servers, mail post offices
and database servers," said Bob Rainone, director of product management,
U.S. Robotics Corporate/Systems Division. "By incorporating Microsoft's
built-in RAS, for access to these integrated applications, as well as NT's
scalability, network protocol support and system management, U.S.
Robotics' single-chassis solution will be ideal for access to NT
networks."

Integrated NT Server Provides Key Benefits

This new integrated solution will allow remote users to access applications
at the network point of access, versus accessing servers internal to a
corporate network. By pushing processing power to the edges of the network
for remote access applications, the Total Control Enterprise Network Hub
with integrated NT Server capabilities will:

- increase performance to remote users, lowering time online

- decrease backbone traffic from remote users, reducing equipment
costs associated with expanding the network

- increase security by keeping traffic at the network edges

- lower costs associated with network management and administration
of routers on the corporate network

The NT Server for the Enterprise Network Hub also will be ideal for
Internet Service Providers (ISPs), allowing them to install a single
chassis integrating communications and Web server technology into one
platform.

Additionally, an ISP or corporation can further protect their network by
implementing security and accounting services in an NT Server at the
network edge, authenticating users at the network periphery rather than
through a central security server.

To create this level of integration, U.S. Robotics has created drivers for
the Total Control Enterprise Network Hub's high-speed packet and TDM buses
using NT's standard software architecture and development interfaces. This
allows an integrated NT server to communicate seamlessly with other
components in the chassis for the best possible performance, simple
installation and ease of management.

U.S. Robotics is one of the world's leading suppliers of products and
systems that provide access to information. The company designs,
manufactures, markets and supports remote access servers, enterprise
communications systems, desktop/mobile client products and modems and
telephony products that connect computers and other equipment over analog,
digital and switched cellular networks, enabling users to gain access to,
manage and share data, fax and voice information. Its customers include
Internet service providers, regional Bell operating companies,
inter-exchange carriers and a wide range of other large and small
businesses, institutions and individuals. The company's 1995 sales were
$889.3 million; sales for the first quarter of fiscal 1996 were $364.8
million.
