UNISYS ANNOUNCES NDP 500, INDUSTRY'S FIRST IMAGE-ENABLED MID-RANGE DOCUMENT
PROCESSOR TO LEVERAGE WINDOWS NT

SAN ANTONIO, TX, APRIL 1, 1996 -- Unisys Corporation today announced the
NDP 500, the latest in the company's line of Network Document Processor
(NDP) systems for payment processing. The NDP 500, which processes up to
500 documents per minute (DPM), is the industry's first mid-range
transport to operate as a peripheral to PCs employing the powerful
Microsoft Windows NT operating environment. The release was announced at
the Bank Administration Institute's Transaction Processing '96 Conference
here.

Based on a fully open systems design and conforming to key industry
standards for image capture and document processing, the NDP 500 affords
clients a new range of scalable payment processing solutions at lower
operational costs. The NDP 500 is geared towards financial and other
institutions which process checks, remittances, statements, and giros
(single-document payments). Applications are available for both image and
conventional modes for all types of processing, from specialized solutions
such as return items, reject repair, and ATM deposit balancing, to general
proof of deposit.

NDP 500 FEATURES AWARD-WINNING DESIGN, SUPPORT FOR KEY STANDARDS

The NDP 500 transport leverages Unisys expertise in document processing.
Its image capture capabilities conform to prevailing JPEG and CCITT
standards, and it offers an unrivaled range of features, including dual
image, dual filter, image quality monitoring, endorsement flexibility, OCR
read, encode options and secondary document feed.

The design of the NDP 500 transport recently topped 350 business equipment
entries to receive a Gold Award in International Design Magazine's 38th
Annual "Design Review." The award was made based on physical design and
image processing ergonomics.

The NDP 500 significantly reduces the total cost of ownership by
accommodating scalable configurations, industry-standard development
tools, and open connectivity to a variety of popular networks such as
Ethernet, TCP/IP, Token-Ring, and Novell, and databases including Fox Pro
and Microsoft Access, among others.

AVAILABILITY & PRICING

The NDP 500 with Windows NT capability is available for immediate shipment.
The additional NDP 500 features described in this release will be
available for shipment in the second quarter of 1996. In addition, most
installed Unisys DP 500 transports can be upgraded to the new
capabilities.

Pricing for the new NDP 500 system starts at $55,000 and varies depending
on configuration requirements.

WINDOWS NT OPERATING SYSTEM

The NDP 500 exploits the power and user-oriented look and feel of
Microsoft's increasingly popular Windows NT operating system. The
transport employs Windows NT as the system software for track operations,
image capture and image export. This provides an open interface that can
be easily accessed by third-party developers using industry-standard tools
such as Visual Basic and Delphi. The Windows NT operating system also
offers the advantage of reduced hardware requirements. For example,
previously separate image capture and file server functions are now
combined within a single Windows NT image capture server.

NDP 500 CAPABILITIES

NDP 500 capabilities include the following important functions, among
others:

JPEG and CCITT dual image

Simultaneously provides JPEG and CCITT image compression formats
 from single front camera

Both JPEG and CCITT image outputs can be created with single document
pass, so best image format can be used for each application (for
example, gray-level JPEG image can be used for archive application,
and black-and-white CCITT format for image statement print)

Image quality monitor

Permits monitoring of images during application development and
 for system demonstrations

Can also display Courtesy Amount Read values and corresponding
 successful read rates

Images are displayed at periodic intervals, so operator may view
 them without impacting processing

Greater endorsement flexibility

Latest ink jet technology for increased reliability and legibility,
compared with market offerings based on older technology

Endorsement options include graphics for logos, as well as up to
four lines of customizable text for both front and back of document

Endorsing occurs at 500 DPM, using non-toxic ink and print heads
 designed for clean, low-maintenance operability

 Refillable, industry-standard ink cartridges

Program selected OCR

Multiple OCR lines can be program selected and read anywhere on
document, at 500 DPM, without operator intervention

Helps increase NDP 500 throughput, especially in higher-volume
applications such as lockbox processing, which must service many
customers with varying scanline locations and document types

Full field high-speed encode

Allows encoding of up to 65 characters per document in single pass

Beneficial for applications such as reject repair, which require
 full field encoding

Permits full document encoding in less time, reducing risk of holdovers

Can be used with standard encoder option for operational backup

Secondary feeder

Inserts documents into the processing flow through program control,
to increase NDP 500 throughput when control documents are required

Does not interfere with other available NDP 500 options
