SURFWATCH SOFTWARE NOMINATED FOR 1996 COMPUTERWORLD SMITHSONIAN AWARD

Premier Awards Program in the Information Technology Industry Recognizes
Technology That Creates Positive Social Impact

LOS ALTOS, Calif., April 9, 1996 - SurfWatch Software, Inc., today
announced that it has been nominated for a 1996 Computerworld Smithsonian
Award (CWSA), in the education category. SurfWatch, which was nominated
for the award by CompuServe, develops industry-leading parental control
and Internet filtering software.

"Obviously, we're ecstatic about being nominated for such an eminent
award," said Ann Duvall, president of SurfWatch Software. "Of all the
qualities to be recognized for, positive contribution to society is the
one that we value most as a company, because it's a crucial component of
our corporate mission."

The highly prestigious CWSA, considered the premier awards program in the
information technology (IT) industry, honors corporations, organizations
and individuals who use technology to create positive change in society.
In addition to selecting five finalists and a winner in each of 10
categories, CWSA ensures each nominated innovator's place in history as
part of the Smithsonian Institution's permanent research collection.
Finalists for the 1996 CWSA will be announced at the end of April and will
be honored at the eighth annual awards dinner, scheduled for June 3, 1996,
in Washington, D.C.

SurfWatch Software creates award-winning Internet products for personal
computers and licenses Internet access control technology. As a founding
member of the PICS consortium, SurfWatch supports the development of
standards-based Internet rating systems. SurfWatch has rapidly become the
industry-standard tool for blocking access to unwanted materials on the
Internet.

SurfWatch lets parents, teachers and employers block unwanted sexually
explicit and other material from their computers' Internet access-without
restricting the access rights of other Internet users. The software
removes no material from the Internet, simply blocking it at any computer
or local network where it is installed. SurfWatch screens Internet
newsgroups, World Wide Web, FTP, Gopher, Chat and other services.

Established in 1989, the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards (CWSA) were
created by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American
History and Computerworld, the leading newspaper of the information
technology industry. The purpose of the CWSA is to search out and publicly
honor those men and women who are using information technology across a
spectrum of industries to make our planet a more humane, healthy and
cooperative place to live. In celebrating their achievements, CWSA helps
to demystify technology and empowers people to use technology as a tool
for positive change.

SurfWatch Software, Inc., based in Los Altos, Calif., is pioneering the
development of new technologies for the Internet. Founded in January 1995
with a vision of creating high-quality technology products that have a
positive impact on peoples' lives, SurfWatch's first products enable

Internet. SurfWatch Software can be reached at 415-948-9500,
