STORAGETEK ANNOUNCES MIDRANGE CHECK-IMAGE ARCHIVE PRODUCT 9710 AUTOMATED
CARTRIDGE SYSTEM AND QUANTUM DLT PROVIDE AUTOMATION, SECURITY,
COST-EFFECTIVENESS; JOINS THE STORAGETEK LIBRARY FAMILY

LOUISVILLE, Colo. -- Storage Technology Corp. (NYSE:STK) announced today
that its 9710 Automated Cartridge System, with support for Quantum's
DLTtape, is available now for check-image archive system requirements in
the financial industry. Initial DLT support is for the Quantum DLT 4000.

The 9710 joins the StorageTek family of solutions for check image storage.
Other library configurations include the PowderHorn with capacity up to
6,000 cartridges, and WolfCreek, with capacity up to 1,000 cartridges.
These library systems, with the StorageTek performance-based, ultra-high
capacity RedWood SD-3 helical-scan cartridges are also available now.

The 9710 has a capacity of between 252 and 588 cartridges. The 9710 is
especially suited to entry-level to midrange requirements. Using DLT, the
9710 can store up to 11.7 terabytes of uncompressed data or 294 million
check images at 40 kilobytes (.04 megabytes) per image. A single 9710
library could accommodate seven years worth of check images for a site
that captures approximately 170,000 items per day. Additional 9710s or
other StorageTek libraries will accommodate larger daily volumes.

"The data storage challenges that accompany migration to check image
archival are to some extent self-evident to the decision-makers and
implementers of this new technology advantage," said Darrell Royal,
StorageTek director, applications development. "These challenges include a
500-fold increase in storage per check over traditional MICR data, and
institutional demands to satisfy unprecedented capacity, performance and
cost-control requirements."

Royal continued, "StorageTek's tape drives and robotic libraries for
storage have fundamentally changed the debate. For the first time, the
cost of using fully automated tape libraries and archival media for
storing and retrieving check images has fallen below the cost of just film
and developing charges. This means that when a bank makes a decision to
adopt check image capture, the decision to adopt check image archiving
should be automatic."

The 80 bytes of MICR data per check that banks have traditionally stored
are now accompanied by an additional 40,000 bytes of image data per check,
creating an immediate 500-fold increase in storage requirements. The
StorageTek 9710 with DLT can provide automated archival storage for a cost
of approximately $.20 per 1,000 checks, or less.

The StorageTek 9710 with DLT tape drives is available immediately.
Discussions are under way with many of the major check image application
vendors to provide integration into their respective applications.
