Spyglasss Announces Device-Independent Web Technology Kit

Component Technologies Allow Commercial / Corporate Software Developers,
Consumer Device Manufacturers and Systems Integrators to Put the Power of
the WWW Inside Their Products and Services.

Naperville, Ill. -- Monday, April 15, 1996 -- Spyglass Inc. (NASDAQ: SPYG)
announced today the Spyglass Web Technology Kit (WTK), which breaks out
its client technology into components for easier integration of World-Wide
Web technologies to Web-enable applications, services or devices. The WTK
is the most comprehensive Web technology offering available today,
covering multiple platforms and offering a complete, high quality set of
premium Web technologies that developers can "mix and match" for their
solution. The WTK will ship to customers late in the second quarter 1996.

The announcement represents a major step in the evolution of Spyglass
technology and service offerings that began with Mosaic, the Web browser
that established the standard by which Web client technology would be
developed. The WTK is designed to better meet the needs of the embedded
Web technology marketplace. Earlier this year, the company announced the
same strategy for its Web server technology. Now, with this announcement,
two WTKs exist -- one for the client and one for the server.

"On the surface, this may appear to be a completely new strategy for
Spyglass," said Marc Miller, Spyglass' executive vice president of
marketing. "In reality, we've always been in the embedded marketplace.
With this announcement, we're more clearly defining our strategy and
making it easier for new classes of developers to embed our technology
using the Spyglass WTK. We've evolved to offer superior technology so any
application, service or device can leverage the Web, including world-class
browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer."

Targeted at commercial software developers, corporate software developers,
consumer device manufacturers and systems integrators, the WTK is a
collection of technologies with superior advantages:

* Offers the easiest integration into products, services and devices.
* Eliminates dependence on any one operating system or vendor because
the WTK is technology and platform neutral.
* Customers can choose technology-rich components for their specific
  solution.

OFFERS THE EASIEST INTEGRATION INTO PRODUCTS, SERVICES AND DEVICES.

The WTK breaks the traditional Web client into functionally independent
technology components with a variety of ways for working together or
interfacing with a company's existing technologies.

INTEGRATION OPTIONS: Drop-ins, a cross-platform Spyglass API; JAVA, ActiveX
(Windows), OpenDoc (Macintosh) and Netscape Plugins.

ELIMINATE DEPENDENCE ON ANY ONE OPERATING SYSTEM OR VENDOR

Because the WTK is multi-platform and it supports all leading programming
languages required for the Web, customers don't have to worry whether or
not support for their environment will be available.

SCRIPTING LANGUAGE SUPPORT: JAVA Script and Visual Basic Script

MULTI-PLATFORM SUPPORT: Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.1, Macintosh and
the most popular versions of UNIX and device independent technologies
(QNX, kiosk, smart phone, others).

CUSTOMERS CAN CHOOSE TECHNOLOGY-RICH COMPONENTS NEEDED FOR THEIR SOLUTION

Any of the components can be used standalone or a number of them can be
used together to build a solution, such as a Web browser, or Web-enable an
existing application such as a CAD/CAM software package. Spyglass offers
the widest variety and highest quality Web technology available:

HTML SUPPORT: HTML 2.0+, Frames tag, tables tag, insert tag, style sheets
(including support for BitstreamR TrueDocR imaging technology), SGML and
SGML/HTML editing.

MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT: Images (GIF, JPEG), audio (AU, AIFF).

PROTOCOL SUPPORT: HTTP, FTP, Gopher, SMTP, NNTP, POP and Local file.

AUTHENTICATION AND SECURITY SUPPORT: Authentication (Basic and Digest),
Bulk encryption (SSL, PCT) and payment (SET).

USER INTERFACE: Fully customizable (menu bar, progress indicator, splash,
etc.), dynamic kiosk mode option.

INTERNATIONALIZATION: Localized versions (German, French, Spanish, Italian,
Korean, Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese) and supports language
negotiation.

OTHER FEATURES: Cookies support, high-performance HTTP engine,
single-connection, keep-alive option, text conferencing, content
filtering, stack and dialer (optional) and search engine (optional)

BEST ANSWER FOR WEB-ENABLING APPLICATIONS

According to Miller, the evolving uses of the Web create a space that only
Spyglass can fill. "Companies need to control their own destiny on the
Web," he said. "We're the best solution for Web-enabling applications,
services and devices because our offerings are easiest to embed, feature
rich, technology-neutral, multi-platform and device independent. From a
business standpoint, companies can cut time to market, save development
dollars, leverage their own brand name as part of their product or service
while providing universal customer access. It's a partnership that can't
be beaten."

NEW PACKAGING ALLOWS MORE DEVELOPERS TO WEB-ENABLE APPLICATIONS

Spyglass has lowered the entry point with the WTK to attract many new
customers. "We were finding that many integrators and IS departments
wanted our technology, but could not take on the responsibility of several
thousand licenses," Miller said. "This lower entry point will be appealing
to emerging application providers where enormous opportunities are
available to us."

The Spyglass WTK for the client starts at $25,000, which includes 1,000
licenses and a one-year support and maintenance contract. The Spyglass WTK
for the server (announced on January 16, 1996) starts at $25,000, which
includes 100 licenses, and a one-year support and maintenance contract.
