SHIVA ANNOUNCES LANROVER ACCESS SWITCH; PROVIDES LARGE ENTERPRISES,
CARRIERS AND INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS WITH A SINGLE ARCHITECTURE FOR
INTRANET/INTERNET AND PRIVATE LAN ACCESS

Delivers a Scalable, High-Capacity and High-Performance Platform for Secure
Analog and ISDN Remote Access

NETWORLD+INTEROP, LAS VEGAS, NEV., April 2, 1996 -- Shiva Corporation today
announced the LanRover Access Switch, a modular, high-performance remote
networking platform for high-volume analog and ISDN call termination via
T1/E1 and Primary Rate Interface (PRI) lines. The LanRover Access Switch
builds upon the proven strengths of Shiva's award-winning LanRover
technology and adds to it a cooperative multiprocessing architecture.
Designed to support over one hundred dial-in users across multiple,
industry standard, high-speed buses, LanRover Access Switch is the first
product of its kind that meets the full range of remote networking needs
in a Point-of-Presence (POP) form factor.

"Remote networking has emerged as one of the most strategic infrastructure
markets today, with major implications for the information technology and
telecommunications industries," said Frank Ingari, chairman and CEO of
Shiva Corporation. "Corporate buyers and carriers alike are eager to
deploy second-generation systems that address the full range of remote
networking applications with one cohesive, future-friendly architecture.
With LanRover Access Switch, Shiva now provides a uniquely comprehensive
product suite including the ubiquitous open ShivaPPP client software
package, the market-leading corporate standard ShivOS server software and
LanRover hardware products, and the carrier-class, high-density Access
Switch. Enterprise customers, in particular, want a customer premise
solution that meets their requirements today, while allowing them the
option of taking advantage of future opportunities such as outsourcing
remote access from a favored carrier or Internet Service Provider. Shiva,
and our traditional channel partners, will focus on the enterprise market,
while Nortel will provide a unique focus and presence in the worldwide
carrier and ISP segments."

George Bateman, technical advisor, American Express said, "Shiva's LanRover
Access Switch is a key strategic technology necessary to service the
remote access required in our business. The intermixing of analog and ISDN
technologies provides an extraordinary infrastructure of economies.
Additionally, I believe the Tariff Management capabilities will have a
tremendous effect on minimizing telecommunications charges and will
literally offset the LanRover Access Switch hardware costs."

CHANGING MARKET DYNAMICS OF DATA COMMUNICATIONS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

According to Strategic Networks, a leading industry analyst firm, the
market for large scale remote access equipment is expected to grow greater
than 100 percent during 1996. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are
rapidly scaling their network infrastructures to meet increasing demand;
network managers are extending their corporate networks to include remote
access and access to the Internet; and carriers are devising strategies to
deliver a complete offering of communications services (including
outsourcing LAN access) to consumers and corporate customers. These
strategies increasingly demand many of the features previously available
only in corporate LAN access servers, such as native support for the LLC
protocol, enabling IBM mainframe and AS/400 access, and thorough
compatibility testing with non-Internet technologies such as terminal
emulation and remote control software, and LAN-based email.

Nick Lippis, president of Strategic Networks, commented, "Shiva's LanRover
Access Switch is a powerful product that offers a great degree of
scalability at a critical juncture in the industry. By leveraging
partnerships and seeding its client software, Shiva has created a
potentially huge pull-through market that could set the stage for rapid
adoption of the LanRover Access Switch throughout corporations, ISPs and
carriers worldwide."

INTEGRATED, SCALABLE PLATFORM REDUCES COMPLEXITY AND ENABLES EASIER
DEPLOYMENT

The LanRover Access Switch is designed to meet the needs of large
enterprises, carriers and Internet Service Providers. It significantly
reduces the complexity of implementing large scale remote access by
providing a single, fully integrated solution for analog and ISDN
connectivity. The modular design offers the scalability customers need to
expand capacity and/or migrate to new technologies such as Frame Relay or
ATM.

LanRover Access Switch supports all major remote networking functionality
found in the ShivOS 4.0 operating system software such as single-user
dial-in, shared dial-out for LAN-based users and LAN-to-LAN routing for
branch and home office connectivity. It also includes multiplatform,
multiprotocol support, and extensive ease-of-use, management and security
features.

Additionally, LanRover Access Switch includes Tariff Management
technologies (see white paper, http://www.shiva.com/remote/access_switch/)
that focus on bandwidth control, connection control and data control for
cost containment of telecommunications services. Shiva's Tariff Management
technologies include the concept of "virtual connections" for
client-to-LAN environments. This means that dial-in users with ordinary
terminal adapters can now take advantage of ISDN's fast call set-up times
and high performance while, at the same time, minimize WAN connect-time
costs by only keeping dial-in links active when actual data is being sent.
Until ShivOS 4.0, this feature has only been available in LAN-to-LAN
environments (including personal ISDN routers). In addition to lower
telephone bills, virtual connections provide superior ease-of-use by
making set-up and tear-down of calls transparent to the user.

LanRover Access Switch also provides a Smart Detect feature that enables a
single phone number to be used for analog and ISDN dial-in remote access
over single or multiple T1/PRI lines. With Smart Detect, remote users only
need one phone number for dial-in access. Additionally, Smart Detect
simplifies management by eliminating the need for separate T1/PRI lines
for analog and ISDN calls.

MULTIPROCESSING ARCHITECTURE FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE, SPEED AND THROUGHPUT

Unlike competitive offerings designed for different purposes (such as
backbone routers, terminal servers or modem banks), the LanRover Access
Switch is designed to meet the distinct requirements of remote networking
with a combination of multiprotocol routing, data switching, PBX-style
call control, and client/server systems management.

Shiva's LanRover Access Switch employs a unique multiprocessing switching
architecture with 200 MIPs of processing power. This design enables all
critical tasks to be done in parallel, delivering higher performance
speeds and data throughput than pipelined, single-processor
architectures.

Another key differentiator is LanRover Access Switch's low latency design
that offers improved performance for analog dial-in. Data is pumped out of
the digital modem chip set directly onto a high speed bus. This eliminates
an extra step of processing, which competitive products require through a
serial controller.

STRATEGIC AGREEMENT WITH NORTEL ADDRESSES ISP AND CARRIER MARKET

Shiva and Nortel formed an agreement in 1995 (see May 15, 1995, release) to
deliver solutions to carriers, ISPs and large enterprises worldwide. As a
result, Nortel's RAPPORT Dial-up Switch, the peer product of Shiva's
LanRover Access Switch, is targeted at ISPs and carriers.

"Nortel's RAPPORT Dial-up Switch takes the core of Shiva's technology,
scales for high density, and adds carrier-grade functions for statistics
management and billing," said Nortel's Micky Tsui, assistant vice
president, Internet Solutions. "One of our key customers, WilTel, has
already begun installing the RAPPORT Dial-up Switch with 150 Points of
Presence to offer Internet services to more than 40,000 existing corporate
customers, representing millions of consumers across the country."

EVOLVING REMOTE ACCESS MARKET

COMPREHENSIVE SECURITY FEATURES

Security is a key concern of enterprises, ISPs and carriers managing
sophisticated networks with large numbers of remote users dialing into
multiple sites. LanRover Access Switch provides many options for security,
including support for third-party security products from vendors such as
Security Dynamics, Digital Pathways, and solutions based on TACACS+ and
RADIUS.

LanRover Access Switch customers can employ a centralized database to store
authentication and authorization data for increased security and
simplified management. Using RADIUS, Access Switch customers can collect
detailed information such as customer ID, type of service, number called
and connection parameters. This is a particularly important feature for
carriers, ISPs, and enterprises concerned with cost center billing.
Additionally, the LanRover Access Switch itself can act as a centralized
authentication and authorization server.

UNIX/HP OPENVIEW MANAGEMENT FEATURES FOR GREATER FLEXIBILITY

LanRover Access Switch offers a broad range of options that simplify
management of diverse networks. In addition to the Shiva Net Manager for
Windows, LanRover Access Switch provides Unix/HP OpenView management.
LanRover Access Switch customers can manage the Access Switch and backbone
network components on a common Unix platform, and launch management
capabilities from HP OpenView. This provides users with a choice of
management environments augmented by real-time monitoring functions within
HP OpenView.
