QMS Image Management Solutions Division Announces QMS Ultra Technology for
High Performance PostScript Printing and Viewing

New QMS Ultra Technology Will Enable Viewing and Printing of PostScript
Files At Speeds of up to Several Hundred Pages Per Minute

APRIL 21, 1996 - MOBILE, AL - QMS, Inc. (NYSE:AQM) today significantly
advanced the capabilities of its CrownImage enterprise-wide digital
imaging products with the announcement of the QMS Ultra page description
language (PDL) processor, which is optimized for Windows NT and its
inherent Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) capability. The combination of
this new multi-threaded version of QMS' highly successful
PostScript-compatible language and the native scaleability of NT-based
multiprocessor systems makes it possible to provide a dramatically higher
level of performance for high end printing and enterprise-wide viewing of
Postscript documents than ever before possible.

"The QMS UltraScript PDL Processor which we developed in 1988 was designed
from the beginning with parallel computing paradigms in mind," said Donald
L. Parker, QMS' Chief Technology Officer. "The inherent page-object
orientation of our intermediate processing representations and the
structure of our interpreters and graphics libraries all make it possible
to realize a high degree of parallelism in PostScript language
interpretation and the page rendering process. By combining this language
processor with the multiprocessing and multi-threading capabilities of
Windows NT, we have realized heretofore unreachable speeds in PostScript
processing on affordable, open-system platforms. This is a
market-responsive solution for anyone requiring the fastest available
printing and viewing of Postscript language files.

"In recognition of the processing requirements of Postscript language
processing, particularly in high volume environments, we began work in the
late 1980's to create an implementation that could take advantage of the
improvements offered by parallel processors. While other companies are
proposing to deliver parallel compatible systems, QMS Ultra technology
accomplishes multiple-processor rendering of images more efficiently and
cost-effectively, and with better overall throughput than any other
solution available," added Parker.

The first use of the QMS Ultra technology is in the CrownImage digital
imaging system products from QMS Image Management Solutions (IMS)
Division. The QMS CrownImage products represent a new level of integrated
functionality for document imaging products. The system provides support
for standard electronic printing, image/document capture, image processing
for document imaging (view, print, intelligent recognition, storage, and
retrieval), digital copying services, and document publishing through
enterprise messaging and on-line services. In this context, QMS Ultra
technology enables the CrownImage systems to become very powerful
"front-end" systems for today's highest performance print systems, while
also providing work center and enterprise-wide document viewing
capability.

"One of the top considerations for customers who are implementing
enterprise imaging systems is fast performance," Perry Hockaday, Director
of IMS said. "These customers have seen their earlier solutions fall
behind their current needs in the three critical areas of capture,
management and presentation (viewing and printing) of information. QMS
Ultra allows us to address the specific need for very high
first-copy-speed PostScript printing and viewing."

When QMS Ultra is used as a high speed printer front-end, a typical
configuration is a Quad-Pentium server receiving PostScript input files
from the network and producing output matched to one or more attached
printing engines (monochrome or color). In such a configuration, speeds up
to several hundred pages per minute are achievable. By adding one or more
CrownImage scanners, this system becomes a very high speed digital copier
as well. When QMS Ultra is used in support of PostScript viewing it can be
implemented as a local applet or as a server-processor configuration.
Given these varied configurations, the technology is extremely scaleable
and can service demands from desktop to reprocenter usage.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

Windows NT and Windows `95 versions of CrownImage are available today. The
QMS Ultra option for CrownImage will be available for select installations
in the summer of 1996. For information on the developing family of QMS
Ultra-based products contact the IMS Division of QMS. QMS is currently in
discussions with several companies regarding OEM configurations of the QMS
Ultra server product and is pursuing OEM licensing arrangements with these
companies.

While pricing is dependent on configuration, the single license cost for
QMS Ultra as an option to CrownImage is $1997. The price of a minimum
CrownImage system including CrownImage software, a high performance 36 ppm
scanner and a Windows NT CrownImage server starts at approximately
$25,000. QMS Crown ImageServer Print Systems, with print speeds from 10 to
45 pages per minute, range in price from $3,000 to $60,000. Marking
engines planned for the QMS Ultra server-based front-end configuration
range from 12-50 ppm color offerings and 40-300 ppm monochrome versions.
