Bedford, Massachusetts, USA, April 17, 1996 -- The Crescent Division of
Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS) today announced the immediate
availability of PDQComm Release 3.1, the most complete library of custom
controls, subroutines and functions for serial communications within the
Visual Basic programming environment. PDQComm 3.1, incorporating both 16-
and 32-bit ActiveX support, is the only Visual Basic serial communication
package to support the Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI)
which enables developers to seamlessly add telephony support to VB
applications.

PDQComm extends and enhances Visual Basic's "in-box" MSComm control, and
provides both low- and high-level serial communications services.
Developers use PDQComm to build more robust applications and to support
more users within their organizations without taking the time to recode
for file transfers.

With the new TAPI support, PDQComm 3.1 offers developers modem setup and
configuration through the operating system, rather than within the
application. The product now offers call location support, allowing
application developers to avoid complicated address books and device
sharing among concurrently-running TAPI applications.

"Setting up TAPI was easy because PDQComm provided a very good object
model. We were able to upgrade our Work Force Automation application in
Visual Basic 4.0 in record time," said Mario Coelho, a Microsoft certified
trainer and freelance consultant in Visual Basic, Access and SQL Server.
"Before we transitioned our applications to VB4 we used to spend months
trying to update the communication modules between the client and server,
but with PDQComm and VB4 we are able to update our information in less
than two weeks."

PDQComm also supports Visual Basic's unique multiple serial port operation.
All serial communications are handled through the Windows Application
Programming Interface (API) and take advantage of the native Windows
communications facilities. With the ModemWare software included in the
package, PDQComm is flexible enough to support modems from a wide variety
of manufacturers.

Developers can use PDQComm for support of low-level serial communications,
event-driven data transmission and error handling, and built-in
handshaking protocols. These features dramatically reduce coding time and
effort for applications requiring file transfers and other serial data
transmissions.

Terminal emulations are created through a built-in terminal emulation
window that supports ANSI, TTY, VT220, VT100 and VT52 emulation. PDQComm
also provides a Windows clipboard for cutting and pasting to and from the
terminal window and supports an adjustable scroll-back buffer of up to 32K
of received data. This allows simple construction of mixed-mode (terminal
and GUI) applications in Visual Basic.

PDQComm further allows developers to transfer a file using a single line of
code, by simply setting the transfer protocol and specifying the filename.
An optional file transfer status dialog box informs the user of file
transfer progress, completion status and bytes transferred. PDQComm also
supports automated Zmodem download and Zmodem resume functions for failed
file transfers. Background transfers can also be performed by using
XModem-Checksum, XModem-CRC, XModem-1K, YModem-G, YModem-Batch, Zmodem,
Kermit and CompuServe B+ protocols.

PDQComm Release 3.1 is available at the suggested U.S. retail price of
$199.00. Registered users of PDQComm Release 3.0X will automatically
receive a free upgrade to Release 3.1. Registered users of PDQComm Release
2.X and earlier can upgrade at the suggested U.S. retail price of $99.00.
