PILOT LAUNCHES NEXT GENERATION DECISION SUPPORT SUITE

BREAKTHROUGH DYNAMIC OLAP ARCHITECTURE REDUCES RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS FOR
VERY COMPLEX BUSINESS ANALYSIS BY 50 TO 500%

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - APRIL 15, 1996 - Pilot Software, Inc., a company of The
Dun & Bradstreet Corporation, today announced the launch of the Pilot
Decision Support Suite, Version 5, a comprehensive on-line analytical
processing (OLAP) environment with a breakthrough dynamic,
multi-dimensional architecture that significantly reduces consolidation
time and server size. This new release is designed to enable very complex
sales and marketing analysis, like consumer segmentation, merchandise mix
and category management, to be deployed quickly and affordably.

"Version 5 is a milestone release for Pilot," said Eric Kim, president and
CEO. "We have integrated our recognized LightShip EIS, DSS and OLAP
capabilities to deliver the only complete, extensible decision support
environment built on open standards. It provides dimensionally rich
visualization and modeling capabilities with an OLAP engine that
outperforms any competitive product in the industry. Version 5 makes the
complex business analyses that organizations need to effectively acquire,
retain and maximize business with their customers both practical and
affordable."

"Version 5 demonstrates precisely the kind of customer appeal, ingenuity
and innovation we expect from Pilot," said Robert E. Weissman, chairman
and CEO of Dun & Bradstreet, and future chairman and CEO of Cognizant
Corporation. "Pilot will play a vital role in Cognizant's strategy when we
spin off from D&B this fall."

The breakthrough architecture of Version 5 overcomes many of the
limitations of traditional multi-dimensional and relational OLAP
approaches by providing the ability to define dynamic dimensions and
hierarchies. These unique capabilities allow complex analyses to be
performed against hundreds of dimensions, such as flavor, package size and
consumer demographics, at instantaneous response times while minimizing
consolidation time and server size. Initial benchmarks have shown
reductions in resources ranging from fifty to five hundred percent.

According to Paul Olson, research analyst at Database Decisions, "With
Version 5, Pilot demonstrates a clear understanding of the scalability
requirements in the OLAP marketplace. More complex business models can now
be supported while still delivering the consistent response time required
by these applications. Pilot's approach draws on a solid foundation which
has supported dynamic consolidation of time-series data for many years."

PILOT DECISION SUPPORT SUITE

The fully integrated Pilot Decision Support Suite, Version 5, represents
the next generation of Pilot's LightShipR Suite. It consists of five
components - Pilot Desktop, Pilot Analysis Server, Pilot Designer, Pilot
Analysis Library and the Pilot Excel Add-in, that can be purchased
separately or together.

The client components support Windows 95, NT and 3.1 and the server
components are available for NT and leading UNIX platforms. Users can
install the products in a single-user, workgroup or multi-tier distributed
configuration.

NEW OLAP CLIENT SUPPORTS ANALYSIS ANYWHERE

Pilot Desktop provides a complete OLAP environment that can be used
stand-alone or as a client in a network application. Unlike other OLAP
clients which use memory-based architectures, Pilot Desktop includes a
built-in multi-dimensional engine with the same analytical capabilities as
Pilot's powerful multi-user OLAP servers. This provides significant
flexibility and scalability by allowing business models developed with
Pilot Desktop to be seamlessly scaled to a multi-user server and for
portions of a large enterprise model to be snapped onto a mobile desktop.

Pilot Desktop includes a new graphical model builder and rich array of
dimensional tools for ad-hoc, ranking and exception analysis. These tools
allow users to quickly build, navigate and analyze multi- dimensional
business models. Pilot Desktop also includes a new portfolio tool for
saving, organizing and sharing analyses. It includes direct connectivity
to leading relational databases as well as any ODBC- compliant data
source.

SCALABLE OLAP SERVER PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY

The scalability and performance of the multi-platform Pilot Analysis Server
have been dramatically enhanced through support for more structural
dimensions, very large member sets, dynamic dimensions and dynamic
hierarchies. These new capabilities allow users to define complex business
models with large numbers of attributes while minimizing consolidation
time and server size.

With these dynamic capabilities, business users can develop or modify
models on the fly allowing more flexibility in the development process.
Smaller models and faster consolidation times make meeting daily update
requirements in areas like sales and marketing analysis significantly
easier.

The Pilot Analysis Server also provides a new library of built-in
predictive modeling functions that include advanced statistical
forecasting methods and smoothing techniques. This allows complex business
rules to be defined by the business user and maintained at the server
which makes large distributed applications easier to manage.

TOOLS AND LIBRARIES PROVIDE RAPID IMPLEMENTATION AND EXTENSIBILITY

Version 5 includes an optional design environment and a pre-built analysis
library for customizing and extending the Pilot Decision Support Suite.
This allows solutions to be deployed very quickly and then incrementally
enhanced.

New capabilities in Pilot Designer include an object manager, a toolbar
control, drag-and-drop events and an integrated debugger. The Pilot
Analysis Library includes enhanced modules for complex ranking, 80/20
Pareto analysis, BCG quadrant analysis and trendline forecasting.

OPEN STANDARDS PROVIDE PLUG AND PLAY COMPATIBILITY

Version 5 extends the open architecture of the Pilot Decision Support Suite
with enhanced support for industry standard interfaces including OLE 2.0,
ODBC and MAPI. These new interfaces allow Pilot's advanced OLAP
capabilities to be seamlessly integrated with other key components of
corporate IT architectures.

OLE 2.0 support allows thousands of components to extend Pilot Designer.
The properties and events of the component appear in Pilot Designer as if
the object were a standard part of the environment. ODBC support allows
any ODBC-compliant tool to be integrated into the Pilot Decision Support
Suite. This new capability allows users to create presentation quality
reports through client/server report writers. MAPI support allows
workgroups to share analyses through MS-Mail and other MAPI-compliant mail
packages.

The new Pilot Excel Add-in allows Pilot's OLAP capabilities to be
integrated into spreadsheet solutions. The add-in provides dimensional
selection, drill down and rotate facilities that allow the user access
information in multiple dimensional models from Excel.

In addition, the open architecture of the Pilot Decision Support Suite,
Version 5, is being extended with a set of Internet components that will
enable commercial Web browsers to access the powerful analytic
capabilities of the Pilot environment. These components will be available
after the commercial availability of Version 5.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The Pilot Decision Support Suite, Version 5, is scheduled to be available
by Summer 1996. A five concurrent-user configuration will start at $30,000
in the United States. A range of flexible upgrade options will be
available for existing customers.
