O'REILLY RELEASES "CGI PROGRAMMING ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB"

New Nutshell Handbook is Comprehensive Guide to Basic and Advanced CGI
Programming

SEBASTOPOL, CA--Common Gateway Interface (CGI) brings the Web's promise of
interactivity to life--it allows Web sites to be more than static "digital
brochures." Using CGI, a Web server can respond to a browser's request by
instantly generating dynamic Web pages that run programs within an HTML
document. CGI scripts can offer interactive queries, serve up-to-date
information from databases or even animate imagemaps.

O'Reilly & Associates' just-released book "CGI Programming on the World
Wide Web" offers a comprehensive explanation of CGI and related
techniques. Author Shishir Gundavaram starts at the beginning, explaining
the value of CGI and how it works, and goes on to explore the subtle
details of CGI programming. The book thoroughly covers the fundamental CGI
processes: passing information between client (browser) and server;
interacting with databases with SQL; embedding Server Side Includes (SSI);
generating graphics; and writing gateways to existing programs. It then
delves into sophisticated programming--cookies, storing information while
handling multiple forms, imagemap manipulation, and more.

"CGI Programming on the World Wide Web" also includes powerful new software
applications written by Gundavaram such as Sprite (database), CGI Lint
(debugging program), and a program for writing and parsing extensions to
HTML. The software is available at O'Reilly's ftp site at
ftp://ftp.ora.com/published/oreilly/nutshell/cgi. More CGI resources,
including CGI Programming's chapter on Server Side Includes, are available
on O'Reilly's Web site at http://www.ora.com/info/cgi/. In addition to the
book excerpt, the CGI Web page includes examples of CGI scripts discussed
in the book; an Introduction to CGI and the book by editor Andy Oram;
"O'Reilly Webmasters' Choice: Great CGI Sites"; and "Debugging CGI
Programs with WebSite," an article by WebSite developer Robert Denny.

For most of the examples, "CGI Programming on the World Wide Web" uses the
most common platform (UNIX) and the most popular language (Perl) used for
CGI programming today. However, it also introduces the essentials of
making CGI work with other platforms and languages. The actual programming
techniques are not too different from one platform and language to
another; the lessons from this book can be applied to any tools the reader
chooses.
