ONTOS PATENTS OBJECT INTEGRATION TECHNOLOGY

NEW SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY SUPPORTS DATA ACCESS FOR OO APPLICATIONS

April 22, 1996, Lowell, MA--ONTOS, Inc. today announced the U.S. Patent
Office has allowed its patent entitled "Object-oriented Data Store
Integration Environment."

The patented technology provides the means for smoothly integrating any
data with objected-oriented (OO) applications. The technology is likely to
give users significant competitive advantage, according to ONTOS. "There
are several approaches that provide transparent access to relational
databases within C++ programs. However, this newly patented technology
isn't limited to integration with relational data stores. It enables
transparent integration with any data and provides the flexibility to
change data location and format without changing the application program,"
says ONTOS co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Craig T. Harris. "This
is a key differentiator from other integration technologies and greatly
extends the practical potential of OO application development across the
enterprise.

"The competitive protection afforded by this patent permits ONTOS to focus
on integrating information from diverse persistent data stores into a
common OO framework," Harris continues. The technology underlies the ONTOS
OO framework for information access and distribution, and is commercially
available in the ONTOS Object Integration Server (OIS) product family.

COST-EFFECTIVE OO DEVELOPMENT

The newly patented technology separates the logical view from the physical
view of data and segregates the mapping between those views into a
separate repository. This approach provides benefits to programmers,
database administrators, and IT executives.

The technology makes it easy for application programmers to integrate new
OO applications with existing data and to respond to new requirements in a
fast-changing IS environment. C++ applications, for example, can interact
with an existing database without any requirement for the developers to
know data formats, application program interfaces (APIs) or the data
manipulation language (DML) used to access the information. As a result,
OO applications can be built more rapidly and cost-effectively than with
alternative approaches.

In the past, database administrators have been constrained in tuning system
performance because changing schemas tended to break existing
applications. With ONTOS's newly patented technology, administrators can
effectively tune systems to attain optimum performance, knowing that the
effect on applications is isolated and easily managed in ONTOS's mapping
repository.

"Over time, most organizations have become locked into certain databases
simply because the cost of rewriting applications to take advantage of new
database technologies is just too prohibitive," Harris maintains. "By
making it possible to easily migrate information from one database
platform to another, this technology gives IT executives the freedom to
select the most appropriate database environment for OO applications."

ABOUT ONTOS

ONTOS, Inc. develops and markets an OO framework for developing and
deploying distributed, network-based applications. Key components include
ONTOS OIS, a software product family that enables transparent access and
integration between OO applications and heterogeneous data stores, and
ONTOS DB, the company's flagship object database.

ONTOS is an Oracle Business Alliance member, a Sybase Open Solutions
Partner, and a member of the Object Management Group (OMG) and the Object
