ON Technology Announces New DaVinci Package With Native Support for SMTP
and MIME

CAMBRIDGE, MASS., APRIL 2, 1996 -- ON Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: ONTC)
today announced an expansion of its DaVinci productline that leverages
eight years of award-winning LAN e-mail experience with new, native
support for industry-standard Internet messaging protocols like SMTP, POP3
and MIME.

The new ON Technology offering, DaVinci SMTP eMAIL, leverages field-proven
DaVinci LAN e-mail technologies, including a graphical user interface,
hierarchical folders, spell-checker, Windows-based administration console,
central address book management, and time-saving user features like rules
and electronic forms.

In combination with new support for three major industry-backed protocols
-- the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP), Post Office Protocol version
3 (POP3) and Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) -- DaVinci SMTP
eMAIL delivers a complete, full-featured solution for e-mail
communications across a corporate Intranet or globally over the Internet.

"We will continue to support our LAN e-mail business, but DaVinci SMTP
eMAIL is a real breakthrough," said John Rizzi, vice president of sales,
ON Technology. "SMTP is the clear winner in the battle for the worldwide
messaging protocol for both Intranet and Internet communications. In
addition to adopting the industry-standard messaging transport, our new
DaVinci package provides a reasonable migration path for network
administrators who may not be prepared to completely convert their
environment to IP from IPX simply to get Internet mail to each desktop."

DaVinci SMTP eMAIL is ideally suited for the Novell NetWare environment
that needs to extend its LAN e-mail system to the Internet without
continuing reliance on proprietary messaging transports, an IP stack and
IP address for every desktop, or an intermediate gateway. As a complete
package, DaVinci SMTP eMAIL provides direct NetWare-to-Internet messaging
without requiring MHS as the LAN transport, TCP/IP on each workstation, or
a dedicated MHS-to-SMTP gateway

DaVinci SMTP eMAIL also is well suited for organizations just now
considering electronic mail capabilities for global communications. Unlike
some Internet e-mail offerings, DaVinci SMTP eMAIL is a complete,
fully-featured solution that allows network administrators to avoid
relying on shareware, integrating multiple components, or manually
entering user names to create an address book for the system.

ROBUST, NATIVE IMPLEMENTATIONS OF POP3, SMTP AND MIME STANDARDS

The DaVinci SMTP eMAIL package includes a robust implementation of POP3
that runs over both IP and IPX, allowing established NetWare environments
to avoid an immediate shift to TCP/IP on the LAN and the concomitant
placement of TCP/IP stacks on each desktop that most Internet e-mail
packages require. The POP3 protocol serves as a replacement for the MHS
LAN transport required under DaVinci eMAIL and provides for local mail
delivery up to three times faster than the proprietary MHS protocol, which
is built on the slower "store and forward" cycling technology.

The DaVinci POP3 server is tightly integrated with the industry-standard
messaging backbone SMTP, forming a client/server environment that provides
immediate delivery of e-mail. With native SMTP support, DaVinci SMTP eMAIL
will exchange messages seamlessly with other SMTP sites around the world,
such as most businesses, educational sites and government facilities,
without requiring Unix hardware or even a dedicated PC mail server.

Unlike several other proposed messaging standards, such as X.400 and X.500,
which relatively few corporate sites have adopted due to the complexity of
installing and managing the protocols themselves, SMTP has become widely
accepted throughout the world.

Also included in the new DaVinci package is support for MIME, the
Internet-standard encoding method for sending e-mail attachments, which
allows users to exchange files without loss of data integrity. The DaVinci
SMTP eMAIL support for MIME covers a wide variety of file types, including
binary, graphics (JPEG and GIF), video (MPEG), audio, voice and text.

DaVinci SMTP eMAIL also is designed for remote users. A special Work
Offline option is provided that allows users to store messages in an
"outbox" while working offline. When the user is ready to make a dial-up
connection, the "outbox" can be set to trigger a remote access product,
such as Shiva LAN Rover, to make a dial-up PPP connection. With this
unique offline feature users can avoid long, costly remote node
connections to an enterprise LAN.

DAVINCI SMTP EMAIL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

DaVinci SMTP eMAIL consists of four NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs) that
are loaded on a NetWare 3.x or 4.x server. The server must have TCP/IP
installed and should have a minimum of 2 MB of RAM for the NLMs and 15 MB
of free hard-drive space. A static TCP/IP address should be dedicated for
the server. Supported clients are Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT.

For multi-site environments, only one installation needs to run the DaVinci
SMTP eMAIL NLMs. Satellite installations must be able to "see" the primary
server but only the administrative and client portions of the e-mail
package are required.

To connect DaVinci SMTP eMAIL to the Internet, a Domain Name Server, Domain
Name and SendMail capability are necessary; most Internet Service
Providers can supply these requirements.

CARRYING FORWARD FEATURES FROM AWARD-WINNING DAVINCI EMAIL

The new ON Technology offering leverages many established LAN e-mail
capabilities unavailable with many Internet e-mail offerings that provide
only basic user features, require integration of mail services from
multiple providers, and often lack expert technical support by phone or
over the World Wide Web.

DaVinci SMTP eMAIL carries forward administration and user features refined
over eight years with the MHS-based DaVinci eMAIL, which will continue to
be available from ON Technology.

For example, in addition to the popular DaVinci eMAIL Windows-based
administration console and graphical user interface, DaVinci SMTP eMAIL
offers the administrator the choice of capitalizing on NetWare Directory
Services for enterprisewide address book synchronization or capturing user
names from the NetWare bindery.

For users, the popular DaVinci client-based Rules and server-based On the
Road options are fully supported. With DaVinci Rules, e-mail can be
automatically instructed to do specific tasks, such a file in a specific
folder, forward the message to a list of users, auto- delete a message or
play a certain sound for mail from a certain user. For organizations that
require electronic forms, DaVinci Forms is available with DaVinci SMTP
eMAIL.
