NETSCAPE ANNOUNCES NETSCAPE PROXY SERVER 2.0 FOR REPLICATING AND FILTERING
WEB CONTENT

SERVER TO PROVIDE VIRTUAL BANDWIDTH AND REDUCED RESPONSE TIMES AT
NETWORLD+INTEROP NETWORKING TRADE SHOW

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (April 2, 1996) -- Netscape Communications
Corporation (NASDAQ: NCSP) today announced that Netscape Proxy Server 2.0
software will be available this week for downloading in beta form on the
Netscape Internet site. Netscape Proxy Server 2.0 provides
replication-on-demand for work groups by intelligently caching frequently
accessed Internet documents inside the corporate firewall to conserve
bandwidth and reduce response times for clients on corporate "Intranets"
or the Internet. The product is part of Netscape's newly announced
Netscape SuiteSpot integrated suite of Web server software.

To demonstrate the product's capabilities, Netscape also announced that
Netscape Proxy Server is being used by Networld+Interop, one of the
largest networking trade shows, to replicate content from the Internet for
its attendees and exhibitors. Using Netscape Proxy Server, the show's
"InteropNet" network is providing the bandwidth and reliability exhibitors
require to run thousands of Internet demos and exhibitions at the show.
Exhibitors on InteropNet can take advantage of a Netscape Proxy Server by
pointing their web client at "proxy.interop.net:8080" in the proxy
configuration menu.

"The rapid growth of the Internet and corporate Intranets for communication
and collaboration has created a whole new set of challenges for network
administrators," said Atri Chatterjee, director of server marketing at
Netscape. "Network administrators must provide employees with fast,
reliable, encrypted network access to mission-critical enterprise
applications while controlling access to restricted network resources.
Netscape Proxy Server's replication model cost-effectively addresses these
issues."

Netscape Proxy Server features a replication model that conserves network
bandwidth and reduces response times for clients on a network. It
dramatically reduces network traffic and user response times by using
Netscape's high-performance server architecture and a highly efficient,
intelligent cache to retrieve and store up to 128 gigabytes of images,
audio and video clips, Java applets, file archives and Web pages. The
product also provides content filtering to enable network administrators
to block access to specific sites by user and by document. In addition,
the server offers replication-on-command through new scripting features.

Netscape Proxy Server was designed for organizations widely deploying
Internet clients such as Netscape Navigator 2.0. Internet service
providers such as @Home can use Netscape Proxy Server to improve the speed
and reliability of their service and to leverage their investment in
network infrastructure.

"@Home is dedicated to providing the fastest access to the Web. Effective
caching of content is critical to fulfilling our vision of providing true
broadband Internet service," said Milo Medin, vice president of Network
for @Home. "We have worked closely with Netscape to ensure that Netscape
Proxy Server provides a superior caching solution and allows us to easily
manage the hundreds of servers we have across the country. I would
strongly advise any ISP to seriously consider use of Netscape Proxy Server
as an extremely cost-effective way to enhance their users' experience
surfing the Internet. It really makes a difference."

Enterprise customers can use Netscape Proxy Server to replicate content
from the Internet and corporate Intranets. Deploying Netscape Proxy Server
can help companies provide faster, better service to their employees and
ease the costs and complexity of network management.

"Netscape Proxy Server has smoothly handled our Internet and Intranet
access for more than a year. As a result, we've reduced our network
traffic and improved response times," said John Hilgart, emerging
technology specialist at BASF Corporation. "Netscape Proxy Server provides
intelligent replication and cache management which has simplified network
management and improved performance. In addition, the Netscape Server
Plug-In Application Programming Interface (API) has allowed us to
customize access control and integrate Netscape Proxy Server more tightly
into our existing environment."

Netscape Proxy Server provides unique features that make replicating and
filtering Web content seamless and transparent. They are:

* Efficient, transparent replication of Web documents on demand to reduce
network traffic and improve response times. Netscape Proxy Server
automatically routes requests for Web documents and returns them from the
cache if present and fresh. This replication model is optimally designed
for large, distributed networks like the Internet or a corporate Intranet.
Netscape Proxy Server also supports replication-on-command.

* Content filtering and access control, which provides fine-grain controls
over network access by using URL-based wildcard expressions to limit
access to documents, directories or sites and by allowing user
name/password combinations or wildcard expressions to regulate users. Both
user databases and filters can be imported or accessed from external
sources.

* Enterprise and network management, or proxy scripting, to simplify
network management. The server works with the automatic proxy
configuration in Netscape Navigator, allowing the intelligent and
efficient "routing" of Web traffic among a network of proxy servers based
upon network topology, document request patterns and network/proxy
availability. Support for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP),
encrypted remote administration from major platforms, and advanced logging
and reporting enhance the manageability of large proxy networks. The
Netscape Server Plug-In API allows integration with other network systems
and infrastructure, such as firewalls and authentication systems.

* Enhanced network security & reliability, which provides a single control
point for Web traffic to the enterprise. Security features include three
mechanisms for protected access through a firewall, complete logs of
server transactions, and reverse proxying to allow the protection of a
Netscape server (or another Web server) behind a firewall. Netscape Proxy
Server also can provide access to critical data by responding when the
network or the remote Web server is unavailable.

Netscape Proxy Server is initially available for beta testing on major UNIX
operating environments. The beta version can be downloaded at no charge
beginning this week from the Netscape Internet site
(http://home.netscape.com). The server will also be available on Alpha and
Intel versions of Windows NT later this year. Pricing for Netscape Proxy
Server is US$995. Customers who buy before June 30, 1996 will receive the
Netscape Proxy Server 1.1 immediately and a subscription for one year
which includes an upgrade to the final 2.0 version of Netscape Proxy
Server as well as all major and minor upgrades until June 1997.
