Network Computing Names NetWare 4.1 Best NOS for Second Year

NetWare 4.1 Retains Title as Most "Well-Connected"

OREM, UTAH -- APRIL 24, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that NetWare
4.1, the industry's fastest growing network operating system (NOS), again
received the "Best NOS" title in Network Computing Magazine's 1996
Well-Connected Awards. This award, the 15th bestowed on NetWare 4.1 since
its 1994 introduction, further reinforces NetWare's position as the
leading network server operating system of choice for organizations of all
sizes.

"NetWare 4.1 continues to earn praise and recognition as more organizations
implement it and fully realize the benefits of directory-enabled
computing," said William Donahoo, vice president of marketing for Novell's
NetWare Products Division. "We've focused on providing NetWare 4.1 users
with the best networking technology to address their business
requirements. This award from Network Computing recognizes our continued
success in setting the standard for proven, reliable, open and robust
networks."

NetWare 4.1 continues to be recognized for its consistently strong feature
set. Network Computing's editorial staff cited NetWare 4.1's
industry-standard Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™), along with
the wide variety of available third-party applications, advanced file
management, file and directory compression and remote administration
features as reasons for the product's continued success.

"The Well-Connected Awards are significantly different from other IS or
networking publications' awards," said Patricia Schnaidt, editor-in-chief
of Network Computing. "Our awards aren't based on a reader popularity
contest or editors' secondhand knowledge of the product marketplace. Our
editors have tested these products themselves in our real-world labs.
These are the products they would design into production networks of their
own."

NetWare 4.1 is the latest version of Novell's industry-leading network
operating system. NetWare 4.1 simplifies users' access to network
resources and information, eases network administration and reduces the
cost of network ownership for businesses of all sizes while retaining the
performance, reliability and scalability that have made NetWare the
overwhelming NOS leader. In a recent International Data Corporation (IDC)
study, Novell's NetWare costs less to install and administer than Windows
NT Server due to simplified administration through NDS and more efficient
hardware usage. As the only NOS integrating essential network services --
global directory, file, print, security, messaging, multiprotocol routing
and management -- NetWare 4.1 lays the foundation for Novell's vision of a
Smart Global Network connecting people to others and to the information
they need anytime and anyplace.

Sustained NetWare 4 success continues to drive Novell's momentum. According
to IDC, Novell shipped more NetWare connections in 1995 than all other
server operating systems in the world combined, including those from
Microsoft, IBM, Sun, Hewlett-Packard, Banyan, SCO and all other Unix and
NOS systems. In the NOS category, NetWare maintains an overwhelming 63
percent market share. These figures offer compelling evidence of the
continuing growth of NetWare 4.1 as the network operating system of choice
and its increasing recognition by customers, resellers and developers as a
NOS standard.
