NetWare Web Server Top Performer in Independent Tests

Outside Consulting Firms Find NetWare Web Server Faster than Microsoft IIS
and Netscape Communications Server Running on Windows NT

BRAINSHARE EUROPE, NICE, FRANCE -- APRIL 22, 1996 -- Novell's NetWare Web
Server outperforms Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) and
Netscape's Communications Server running on Microsoft Windows NT, in some
cases by up to 400 percent, according to tests conducted by the
independent testing firms, Shiloh Consulting and Haynes & Company.

"This means the NetWare Web Server can handle more traffic than the
competition, allowing users a comfortable margin for peak loads today and
providing them the maximum room for growth tomorrow," said Mark Griffiths,
director of product marketing at Novell's Internet Commerce Division.

The three products were tested for throughput, response time (latency) and
connections per second in their response to HyperText Markup Language
(HTML), Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and proprietary Application
Programming Interface (API) requests.

When serving straight HTML to 128 clients, the NetWare Web Server attained
a throughput rate of 16.00 megabits per second versus 13.77 for IIS and
4.20 for Netscape. That is nearly 400 percent faster than Netscape's
Communications Server, the current industry leader.

As the number of clients making requests increased, the NetWare Web Server
increased its performance advantage over the competition. Even when the
NetWare Web Server was handling many more HTML requests than the other
servers, its average response time was significantly less than the other
two products.

Additionally, Novell's Local and Remote CGIs overwhelmingly outperformed
the CGI interfaces on either of the other two platforms and was
competitive with the proprietary APIs.

Testing Methodology

The tests were conducted in March using the NetWare Web Server 2.1,
Microsoft Internet Information Server 1.0 and Netscape's Communications
Server 1.12. The NetWare Web Server was tested on the NetWare 4.1
operating sys tem. Microsoft's and Netscape's Web servers were tested on a
Windows NT server, version 3.51 with Service Pack 3 installed.

The tests used the WebStone release version 1.1 server benchmark, which is
regarded as the industry standard for measuring Web server performance.
WebStone runs exclusively on clients, makes all measurements from the
point of view of the clients, and is independent of the server software.
Thus, WebStone is suitable for testing the performance of any Web server,
regardless of architecture, and for testing all combinations of Web
servers, operating systems, network operating systems and hardware.

NetWare Web Server

NetWare Web Server turns NetWare 4.x servers into World Wide Web sites.
Users can install and configure the software and create a Web page in less
than 10 minutes on an existing NetWare 4.x server. NetWare Web Servers
also lets the user publish documents on both the Internet and intranets,
without learning UNIXR or complex Web authoring tools. NetWare Web Server
utilizes Novell Directory Services and other NetWare services for seamless
integration into customers' existing LANs and intranets. NetWare Web
Server comes with NetWare Runtime, a fully operational version of NetWare
that allows customers to cost-effectively deploy the NetWare Web Server in
a dedicated server, if desired.

Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL), is the world's leading networking software
provider. Novell software provides the infrastructure for a networked
world, enabling our customers to connect with other people and the
