Microsoft Announces Self-Paced Training for Supporting Local and Wide Area
Networks

Microsoft Official Curriculum Provides Hands-On, Self-Paced Training and
Preparation for Microsoft Certified Professional Exams

REDMOND, Wash.-April 16, 1996-Microsoft Corporation today announced the
availability of NETWORKING ESSENTIALS, the Microsoft Official Curriculum
self-paced training kit designed for anyone who wants to learn the
fundamentals of networking technology. Upon completion of the coursework,
users will have a broad understanding of the technical concepts and
components in modern network installations. The kit also helps prepare
users to take the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) exams for
Networking Essentials-two of six exams required to become a Microsoft
Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE).

With the publication of the NETWORKING ESSENTIALS kit, self-study materials
are available from Microsoft Press for all of exams required for the MCP
program.

Self-Paced Kit Saves Time and Money

Developed by Microsoft's Business Systems Division Training Group and
distributed by Microsoft Press, this hands-on training kit makes it easy
for computer professionals who are unable to attend an instructor-led
training class to get the in-depth training they need to become MCPs. It's
also an ideal way for advanced users and computer professionals at all
levels to get detailed information about networking technology.

"The NETWORKING ESSENTIALS self-paced kit is an excellent, cost-effective
opportunity for individuals to get a solid grounding in the fundamentals
while preparing for the Microsoft Certified Professional exam," said Nancy
Lewis, director of the Education and Certification division at Microsoft.

Quick Access to Technical Information

The NETWORKING ESSENTIALS self-paced kit includes an 896-page illustrated
study guide that teaches readers to:

* Identify the components of a network and determine the type of
network design most appropriate for a given site
* Identify the different media used in network communications,
distinguish among them, and determine how to use them to connect
servers and clients in a network
* Differentiate among networking standards, protocols, and access
methods and determine which would be the most appropriate for a
  given network
* Identify the primary functions of network operating systems and
distinguish between a centralized computing environment and a
  client/server environment
* Determine how to implement and support the major networking
components (including the server, operating system, and clients)
* Propose a system for adequately securing data on a given network
  and protecting the system's components
* Distinguish between LANs and wide area networks (WANs) and identify
the components used to expand a LAN into a WAN
* Determine how to implement modems in the larger LAN/WAN environment
* Identify strategic LAN support tools and resources and determine how
to use these in troubleshooting basic network problems

The companion CD provides network simulation exercises and video
demonstrations that reinforce the self-paced curriculum.
