Mitel Demonstrates the World's First Voice Communications Over the
Universal Serial Bus (USB)

Demonstrates Interconnection of Computer and Telephone at the Desktop Using
USB technology

KANATA, CANADA (April 19,1996) - Mitel Corporation reinforced its
leadership position in computer telephony integration (CTI) by
demonstrating the world's first voice communication between a telephone
and a PC over the Universal Serial Bus, at the Windows Hardware
Engineering Conference (WinHEC) held April 1-3, 1996 in San Jose,
California. This follows Mitel's demonstration of the first USB Telephone
in February 1996 at the USB Developers Conference.

In addition to being the first demonstration of voice communications over
USB, this demonstration also spotlighted a number of other industry firsts
involving:

* The first demonstration of USB support within Microsoft's Windows 95
operating system.

* The first demonstration of a peripheral device driver built upon
Microsoft's Win32 Driver Model (WDM). Microsoft has developed the Win32
Driver Model to provide a common driver format for both the Microsoft
Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems, thus eliminating the need for
manufacturers to write separate device drivers for each system.

Mitel is part of a consortium of companies including Intel, Microsoft,
Compaq and others from the PC and telecommunications industries that are
developing and backing the Universal Serial Bus as a new open standard for
connecting peripherals to the PC. The Universal Serial Bus is designed to
provide a standard, low-cost "plug and play" interface between PCs and
peripherals. Mitel has worked closely with the initial development group
for USB and is both a specification co-author and the chair of the USB
Sub-committee for Communications Devices.

The Mitel demonstration, which was showcased at the WinHEC general session,
utilized Mitel's USB Telephone together with Mitel's TAPI compliant
telephony application, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft's Windows 95
operating system with soon-to-be released Universal Serial Bus and WDM
support. The demonstration involved the recording, retrieval and playback
of a voice message on a PC with USB capability. The voice message was
input from Mitel's USB Telephone via the Universal Serial Bus and was
stored on the PC within the Microsoft Exchange universal message in-box,
using Mitel's telephony application. It was subsequently retrieved and
played back on the PC. Up until now, voice applications on the PC, like
voicemail, could only be accomplished by using plug-in card solutions. USB
technology allows PC telephony peripherals, like Mitel's USB Telephone, to
enable voice applications on the PC using a simple "plug and play"
interconnection between the peripheral device and the PC, eliminating the
need to open the PC enclosure.

The Universal Serial Bus is a new connection standard that will eventually
replace most existing peripheral interface ports on the PC. The benefits
of this 12 Mbit/sec serial bus include easy- to-use features like
self-configuring external PC peripheral installation with hot attachment
capability. The result is an interface that is ideally suited to act as an
integrating technology between the telephone and computer.

Ian Munns, Mitel's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Technology, said,
"Mitel continues to demonstrate its leadership in USB telephony as the
standard communications vehicle for integration at the desktop. The
integration of computer and telephone technologies has great practical
value for today's business person. Mitel's USB Telephony Peripherals will
help in harmonizing work activities for the telecommuter and other home
office workers by turning their PC into a personal assistant that screens
calls, takes and leaves messages, sets up conference calls, forwards
calls, communicates over the Internet, reads e-mails and even understands
spoken commands."

Carl Stork, Director, Windows Platform at Microsoft remarked: "By being the
first to demonstrate voice communication between a PC and telephone over
USB, Mitel continues to be a recognized leader in USB telephony. Microsoft
is committed to providing USB support on Windows in the second half of
1996. We are encouraged that market leaders like Mitel, whose efforts in
making USB peripherals a reality, are accelerating the roll-out of USB
into the marketplace."

Mitel Corporation is an international telecommunications equipment
supplier, providing enterprise, workgroup and desktop solutions,
semiconductors, public switching systems, network enhancement and gateway
products, open server-based communications products, systems and
components. The Company is active in major growth markets such as computer
telephony integration and emerging technology systems and had revenues of
$589 Million Cdn in fiscal year 1995. Mitel is committed to advancing
people-to-people communications in an open distributed environment.
