NetWorld+Interop 96 Las Vegas Showcases the Networking Industry's Focus on
the Internet

New Internet Event Interop DotCom Draws 10,478 Attendees to the Debut Show

FOSTER CITY, CA, (APRIL 24, 1996)--NetWorld+Interop 96 Las Vegas, the
Summit for Network Computing, held April 1-5 at the Las Vegas Convention
Center, continues to be a showcase for the pervasive growth of the
Internet, intranets and network industry innovation and development, and
as such, was the site for nearly 200 new product, service and technology
announcements. Major networking industry vendors such as Novell, Inc.,
IBM, Cisco Systems Inc., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corporation, BBN Corp.,
Hummingbird Communications Ltd., and Simware Inc., used NetWorld+Interop
as the forum to announce and articulate their Internet and intranet
strategies and new products to the industry as a whole. In Las Vegas,
53,419 qualified attendees and 608 exhibitors were on hand to witness
these developments.

Further proof of the increased level of industry interest in the Internet
was the positive response to Interop DotCom, the marketing and educational
event for Internet business applications and services that debuted in
conjunction with NetWorld+Interop Las Vegas. Interop DotCom was announced
only six weeks before NetWorld+Interop Las Vegas and attracted 10,478
attendees and over 60 Internet-focused exhibitors including industry
leaders Netscape and Sun Microsystems as well as exciting start-ups such
as HmPg Inc.

"NetWorld+Interop is a reflection of the state-of-the-art in
production-quality networking technology and a leading indicator of where
the networking and Internet markets are going," said Michael Millikin,
Senior Vice President of NetWorld+Interop. "In Las Vegas it was
particularly rewarding to look at both events -- N+I and Interop DotCom --
and realize that these events are catalysts helping to drive and shape the
explosive growth of the Internet as well bringing the most
up-to-the-minute information on the Internet revolution to industry
decision makers and buyers."

"NetWorld+Interop continues to be the most important networking event in
the industry for UB Networks," said Doug Wheeler, vice president,
marketing at UB Networks, a NetWorld+Interop exhibitor. "At UB, we are
globally committed to the NetWorld+Interop shows. No other networking
event in the industry allows us to leverage the wide range of marketing
opportunities or brings in the amount of highly qualified leads that
NetWorld+ Interop does."

NETWORLD+INTEROP TECHNOLOGY ON THE INTEROPNET

NetWorld+Interop attendees and exhibitors witnessed a classic example of an
intranet in action through the InteropNet, the world's largest
event-oriented, enterprise, multivendor, multiprotocol network. Technology
Highlights of the Las Vegas 96 InteropNet included multi-point video over
ATM, ATM edge devices, OC-12 (622Mbps) ATM links, and 100baseT and 100VG
exhibitor networks deployed next to Ethernet and Token Ring. Two different
backbones were implemented on the InteropNet-a primary ATM cloud with a
mesh of dedicated permanent virtual circuits between routers and a
dual-attach FDDI ring providing full redundancy. Direct links to the
Internet were provided via a DS-3 (45Mbps) connection which experienced
outbound bursts up to 16Mbps and sustained rates of 8Mbps.

For the first time anywhere, the InteropNet proved interoperability of ATM
in a multivendor demonstration of IISP. Traffic over the ATM networks
reached 140Mbps peaks, and the OC-12 (622Mbps) connection function
flawlessly. In addition, the ATM edge devices proved interoperability
between multiple vendors, and highlighted the challenges that multicast
and broadcast traffic present to ATM networks. Devices on the network
nearly doubled from last year as thousands of devices used both the
InteropNet and its Internet connection.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

The main goal of NetWorld+Interop is continuing education, and the Las
Vegas Conference Program provided attendees with in depth technical
training in networking and interoperability. Reflecting key trends in the
industry as a whole, some of the most popular tutorials and workshops in
Las Vegas were: ATM & IP: Theory & Practice, Networking with NT & Windows,
Intro to TCP/IP & Internetworking, IPng: The Next Generation Internet
Protocol, Audio-Video over the Internet, Design & Optimization of Data
Communications Networks and Internet Plug-and-Play with DHCP.

Themes for the Las Vegas General Conference included ATM, Internet
Technologies, and Network Management & Security. Papers delivered at the
third annual Engineers Conference emphasized traffic management and four
other cutting-edge topics. A special one-day CTI/Telecommunications
Symposium was also incorporated in the program for the first time. Over
1100 attendees took part in this new conference component, which
exclusively focused on computer telephony integration, an increasingly
important source of competitive advantage for enterprises of all sizes.

The Internet Executive Conference featured leaders from Federal Express,
Digital Equipment and Precept Software providing insights into their own
organizations' experiences, as well as legal and technical experts who
supplied advice on how to enter the Internet arena safely and
cost-effectively. The NetWare User Conference, the Network Analysis Forum
and a Netscape Developers Conference preview also took place in
conjunction with NetWorld+Interop Las Vegas. Total conference and class
registration exceeded 7,500, creating the largest NetWorld+Interop
Conference yet.

In addition to the Conference sessions, attendees heard from industry
leaders Bill Gates, chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corporation; Robert
Frankenberg, chairman and CEO of Novell, Inc.; John Gerdelman, president
Network MCI Services, MCI Communications Corporation; Peter Neumann,
principal scientist, Computer Science Laboratory, SRI International; and
Maks Wulkan, executive vice president and co-founder of Eicon Technology
at the five keynote addresses.

BEST OF SHOW AWARDS

NetWorld+Interop honored innovative and noteworthy products during the
highly competitive Best of Show Awards. These awards, sponsored by
McGraw-Hill Publications, were judged by the editors of Data
Communications and LAN Times, and recognized products that most
significantly advanced distributed computing and networking technology.
The winner of the prestigious overall Best Of Show award was Ipsilon
Networks Inc. for its IP switch ATM 1600.
