IBM and Time Life Medical Team to Deliver Healthcare Information Via the
Internet

Center for Patient Education Development and Research of C. Everett Koop
Institute also announced

Washington, D.C., April 15, 1996 . . . In response to the growing public
demand for accurate, timely healthcare information, IBM and Patient
Education Media, Inc., developer of Time Life Medical* healthcare
information announced today an agreement to provide high-quality patient
education through IBM's HealthVillage** Internet service.

Today's announcement includes the following:

o Patient Education Media Inc., and IBM will create on-line products based
on the newly announced Time Life Medical patient-focused videotapes, which
were created under the direction of former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. C.
Everett Koop, now Medical Director of Time Life Medical. Through
HealthVillage, IBM will deliver an interactive on-line representation --
complete with high quality graphics and computer animation --
complementing the 30 Time Life Medical videotapes now available in more
than 18,000 pharmacies nationwide.

o The creation of Time Life Medical Center, a virtual "building" within
IBM's HealthVillage, where consumers can visit and gather information.

o Electronic enablement of the Center for Patient Education Development
and Research of the C. Everett Koop Institute. IBM will provide "intranet"
capability to enable the doctors and healthcare professionals who have
contributed to the creation of the Time Life Medical tapes to engage in an
ongoing, interactive colloquium on ways to enhance the patient-doctor
relationship through patient education. This dynamic interaction will also
enable both the doctors and the Time Life Medical team to continue to
provide the highest quality, most up-to-date patient education materials
available.

"The Internet is a powerful potential conduit for delivering healthcare
information -- like Time Life Medical's offerings -- to consumers,"said
Dr. Richard W. Barker, general manager, IBM Worldwide Healthcare
Solutions. "At its core the Internet and networked computing are about
giving people access to information. We at IBM are committed to doing so
in a user-friendly yet authoritative and objective fashion. This is the
goal of HealthVillage -- its success will be measured by the quality of
the information we make available -- hence our collaboration with Dr. Koop
and the Time Life Medical team."

In commenting on the announcement, J. Keith Green, President and CEO of
Patient Education Media/Time Life Medical, said, "Together with IBM, we
are taking an important step towards the creation of a major new industry,
mass medical communication. Moreover, with IBM, we are putting the
building blocks in place to achieve one of Dr. Koop's visions; the
addition of the Center for Patient Education Development and Research to
the already vital and industrious C. Everett Koop Institute."

The Time Life Medical videotapes were developed with the assistance of more
than 1,000 leading medical experts and in association with more than 25 of
the nation's leading medical and patient advocacy organizations. Among the
conditions covered in the first 30 videos, which are designed to help
patients and their families understand a diagnosis, are coronary heart
disease, depression, diabetes, menopause, prostate cancer, childhood
asthma and stroke. To date, more than one million videotapes have been
shipped to pharmacies around the nation.

The Time Life Medical Center

To extend the reach of Time Life Medical's patient information, IBM will
electronically enable the Time Life Medical Center, an Internet site
within HealthVillage. The Time Life Medical Center will house all of Time
Life Medical's on-line data and will be available to every organization
and consumer who subscribes to HealthVillage. The Center will provide
users with patient education information tailored to individual interests,
up-to-date news, and, eventually, access to the C. Everett Koop Library of
medical and patient information literature.

Over time, IBM will add additional interactive services and applications to
HealthVillage, for consumers, healthcare professionals and healthcare plan
providers. These will be drawn from a range of sources including further
collaboration with Time Life Medical.

The Center for Patient Education Development and Research of the C. Everett
Koop Institute

To ensure that Time Life Medical Center's patient education materials
remain current and to meet the needs of contributing doctors and other
healthcare professionals, The Center for Patient Education Development and
Research has also been established as part of the existing C. Everett Koop
Institute. Using the latest IBM networked computing technology to create
an electronic "think tank", Time Life Medical's associated healthcare
professionals will be able to exchange ideas with each other directly.

"The kind of passion and commitment that the medical community has for
patient education reflects their belief that the patient's individual
needs are enhanced dramatically when the patient has a solid foundation of
understanding of his or her condition. Furthermore, research has indicated
that quality patient education can improve health, financial and
socioeconomic/cultural outcomes," said Dr. Florence Comite, Time Life
Medical's Deputy Medical Director and Associate Professor of Internal
Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School
of Medicine, Founder of Women's Health at the Yale University School of
Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital. "We, together with IBM, are pleased
to provide a central place in cyberspace where these dedicated individuals
can continue to contribute to and benefit from each other's knowledge and
experience in patient education."

HealthVillage

IBM is committed to bringing the power of network-centric computing to bear
on healthcare, globally. A key component of this strategy is
HealthVillage, an Internet service designed by IBM to deliver healthcare
information, services, and education in an easy-to-use manner. IBM is
working with partners such as Time Life Medical, leading providers and
health plans, publishers, and communications concerns within the
healthcare industry to make HealthVillage the most comprehensive and
accessible source of healthcare information on the Internet. IBM is also
developing customized HealthVillage offerings for healthcare providers,
payors and employers to provide online information to their members and
patients.

It is expected that many healthcare organizations will want to create their
own "HealthVillages". IBM's flexible HealthVillage framework will allow
for easy linkage to those villages. For healthcare participants who want a
secure facility to provide information to their employees or customers,
IBM will provide a secure platform upon which participants can build their
own villages.

patient education videos were the first to receive national retail
distribution.
