Hummingbird Integrates Verity topicSEARCH Engine in Columbus

Industry's First Intranet Desktop Software Features Advanced Web Search
Tools With Full-Text Indexing

NORTH YORK, ONTARIO, CANADA (APRIL 2, 1996) Hummingbird Communications Ltd.
(TSE: "HUM" and Nasdaq: "HUMCF"), the worldwide technology and market
leader in the PC to UNIX integration software industry, and Verity, Inc.
(Nasdaq: "VRTY"), a leading provider of search-and-retrieval applications
for the enterprise and the Internet, today announced the integration of
Verity's leading edge search and retrieval technology into Columbus,
Hummingbird's Intranet desktop software. Columbus is a highly functional,
seamlessly integrated Microsoft Windows application designed to allow
organizations to establish and run enterprise wide Intranets.

The integration of Verity's topicSEARCH engine into Columbus provides
powerful indexing and retrieval capabilities to Web browsing, e-mail, and
network news, with keyword, Boolean, proximity, and other complex
searches, and permits the creation and management of multiple indexes for
efficient information capture. In addition, the powerful Gather function
in Columbus automatically captures entire HTML files, and as many of their
linked documents as desired, and stores them-fully indexed by the Verity
engine-on the desktop hard disk for offline searching and access. In
combination with the extensive scheduling capabilities of Columbus, this
means that a complex search can take place overnight, presenting the user
in the morning with a fully-linked, fully-indexed segment of the
organizational Intranet or the World Wide Web.

"Our enterprise customers are actively seeking ways to manage critical
information using Web and other Internet technologies," says Fred Sorkin,
Chairman, President, and CEO of Hummingbird. "The search and retrieval
capabilities offered by the Verity topicSEARCH engine are a fundamental
part of our strategy to satisfy these needs, starting with Columbus, the
industry's first application designed specifically as an Intranet
desktop."

"It does very little good to deliver megabytes of information to a user's
desktop," notes Philippe Courtot, Chairman and CEO of Verity, "unless you
also deliver a means of categorizing and organizing that information in
ways that are meaningful to the individual. Verity's topicSEARCH
technology not only delivers that power, but when integrated into the
desktop, as it is in Columbus, allows the users themselves to decide what
information they need to be most productive."
