HP Introduces Inkjet Printer Designed Exclusively For Windows Users

First Printer in HP's New Professional Series for Business Printing Uses
Breakthrough Printing Technology for Best Speed and Quality at Great
Price

PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA. APRIL 8, 1996

Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced the HP DeskJet 820C Professional
Series printers -- a new family of color inkjet printers designed for
small-office and home-office consumers. The printers are HP's first color
inkjet printers custom-engineered exclusively for Windows users, and they
represent the first implementation of HP's breakthrough DeskJet Printing
Performance Architecture.

The new printers, which are expected to sell for less than $400, offer
superlative print quality and speed for customers who run Windows on their
PCs. They are Microsoft Plug-and-Play-ready for Windows 95 and support
Windows 3.1 and 3.11.

The DeskJet 820Cse printer includes HP's quick-start tool, a CD that
provides small-business and home-office customers with tools to help make
their business communications more effective. It includes a guide to
printer setup.

Excellent Performance in an Affordable Package

DeskJet 820C Series printers use HP's new DeskJet Printing Performance
Architecture to deliver fast, high-quality printing at a price of about
$399 ($486 U.S. list). Printing Performance Architecture is a
comprehensive new printing technology that creates efficiencies between
the host PC and printer resources to improve printer performance.

The DeskJet 820C Series printers use a Windows-optimized version of the new
architecture that works by offloading printer formatting tasks to the host
PC. A single integrated circuit handles the printer mechanics and
input/output. Data flows directly to the printhead from the host PC,
improving print speed performance. DeskJet 820C printers can print up to
6.5 pages per minute (ppm) in black text and 4 ppm in color -- up to twice
as fast as most low-cost inkjet printers.

Versatility

DeskJet 820C printers are affordable to own and operate, with an average
cost per page of only 3 cents for black and 8 cents for color. The
printers can handle a wide range of paper sizes and stocks, making them
ideal for small-business and home-office printing needs. In addition to
letter, legal and custom paper sizes, the printers support labels,
envelopes and transparencies.

Additional features include an envelope feeder that allows users to print
envelopes one at a time and support for manual duplex printing. (When
users pick the duplex option, the driver automatically alternates page
numbers to support two-sided printing. The user manually turns over the
pages.) The printers also offer 50 professional TrueType fonts, allowing
users to create a wide variety of document styles, from everyday reports
and correspondence to direct-mail pieces and custom invitations or cards.

DeskJet 820C printers support DOS printing through Windows.

Professional Series

The DeskJet 820C printer is the first product in HP's new "Professional
Series" product line tailored for business printing, offering
small-business and home-office users superior performance and exceptional
print quality.

Professional-quality Printing Optimized for Windows Users

DeskJet 820C printers use HP's RealLife Imaging System to automatically
deliver vivid colors and sharp black text on plain paper. The RealLife
Imaging System is a set of technologies that includes HP's ColorSmart,
which automatically adjusts and optimizes color settings; HP's Color
Resolution Enhancement technology (C-REt), which blends and layers color
hues for clear, vivid output; and HP-developed pigment-based black inks.

The new printers also feature HP's Tool Box for Windows, a suite of
technologies that simplify and speed printer setup, installation and
operation.

A companion version of the new printer, the DeskJet 820Cxi printer, will be
available through computer resellers. It is expected to sell for about
$379 ($480 U.S. list).

The DeskJet 820C printers come with a one-year, limited warranty. HP's
SupportPack, a three-year Express Exchange service plan, is $85 (U.S.
list).

The printers have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy
Star designation for low power consumption, using up to 80 percent less
energy than dot-matrix printers.

DeskJet 855Cse and 855Cxi Kodak Photo CD Promotion

In conjunction with the introduction of the DeskJet 820C Series printers,
HP announced a special promotional offer for its popular DeskJet 855Cse
and DeskJet 855Cxi printers, introduced in August 1995. These printers,
which sell for about $499, are bundled with an exclusive Kodak Photo CD

brochures, flyers and collateral materials. The promotion, which is
scheduled to begin in April 1996 and will continue while supplies last,
includes an HP/Kodak photo contest that is scheduled to run from April 1
through July 31. The Photo CD offer is available for redemption through
