HP To Demonstrate "Concept" PC Based On SIPC Technologies At WinHEC 96

Technology Demo to Show Potential for the PC in Every Room of the Home

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA. APRIL 1, 1996

A new "concept" PC developed by Hewlett-Packard Company that is as
convenient and easy to use as a home appliance will be demonstrated here
today as Microsoft's Bill Gates presents Microsoft's "Simply Interactive
PC" framework of technologies. The keynote address, "Making the PC an
Appliance," will take place at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference
(WinHEC).

HP worked with Microsoft to develop this technology demonstration, which
will feature a sealed-case, externally expandable "concept" PC designed to
be as easy to use as a consumer appliance, equally at home in the study,
the kitchen or the family room. The "sealed box" PC concept will be
explored by Bill Gates as he discusses the SIPC framework of technologies,
an initiative to make the PC platform the center of entertainment,
communication and productivity in the home, providing the ease of use and
convenience of a consumer appliance.

"HP believes there is an opportunity in practically every room of the house
for consumer PCs with appliance-like ease of use," said Harry W. "Webb"
McKinney, general manager of the HP Home Products Division. "As a leading
supplier of consumer multimedia PCs, with our award-winning HP Pavilion
PC, we work hard to understand what consumers care about and to understand
consumer needs in different areas of the home."

HP is developing leading-edge technologies, including printers, scanners,
faxes, palmtops, interactive-television set-top boxes, PC cable modems and
home PCs, technologies that position HP ideally to capitalize on new
opportunities in the consumer market.

Technologies that are slated to be demonstrated include the following:

 hot plug-and-play Universal Serial Bus (USB), making it
 easy to add and remove peripherals;

 "fire wire" (1394) high-speed video and data interface,
 an emerging bus interface standard (for portables and
 desktops) that provides important linking technology so
 consumers can simply add multiple peripherals, such as
 printers, scanners, digital cameras, camcorders and VCRs
 to their systems;

 removable device bay that can accommodate a range of storage
 devices from tape drives to CDs;

 infrared data interchange (works with HP organizers and
 notebooks);

 OnNow architecture, the industry initiative to create
 "instantly-available" PC devices; and

 Microsoft Windows 95.

"Microsoft is excited to be working with HP to develop the technologies of
SIPC, enabling the PC to become a central device for entertainment and
communications in the home," said Carl Stork, director of Windows
Platforms at Microsoft Corp. "HP's innovation will help make SIPC a
reality."

WinHEC 96, taking place April 1 - 3 at the San Jose Convention Center, will
address the theme of "Mapping the New Platform Capabilities: Beyond
Windows 95," and take an in-depth look at the technical issues concerning
the future of Microsoft Windows-based hardware. The conference is aimed at
senior technical managers; hardware engineers; and product development
managers who will preview the latest hardware standards and designs for
subsystems and components for desktop and mobile PCs, servers and
peripherals designed for the Microsoft Windows family of operating
systems.
