GDC ANNOUNCES APEX-ADVANTAGE '96

GDC'S NETWORK VISION FOCUSES ON ATM SERVICE PROVISIONING GUIDING PRODUCT
DEVELOPMENT, MARKETING PROGRAMS

LAS VEGAS, NV -- April 2, 1996 -- Leveraging its extensive experience
working with service providers and ATM switched networking, General
DataComm, Inc. (NYSE-GDC) today introduced at Networld+Interop (booth #
5345) APEX-ADVANTAGE '96, GDC's vision of how service provisioning will
evolve. The core of the APEX-ADVANTAGE concept, first introduced in March
1995, is to deliver full and flexible ATM support of data, voice and video
applications. As GDC's new strategic ATM blueprint, APEX-ADVANTAGE '96
reflects the evolution of this overall ATM concept to provide for a range
of functionality that optimizes the link from a customer's premises to the
carrier's office.

"With the communications deregulation that is occurring around the world,
service provisioning is becoming more and more competitive. To stand out
from the crowd, service providers must build network infrastructures and
service that support their customers' current needs, and anticipate their
future requirements, as well," said Michael C. Thurk, senior vice
president, marketing and service, GDC. "APEX-ADVANTAGE '96 is GDC's
roadmap for service providers to meet these needs, thus facilitating the
rapid deployment of wide area ATM network communications. And as an ATM
market leader, according to Dataquest, GDC is finding that more and more
service providers are following our roadmap."

There are three underlying technology components of APEX-ADVANTAGE '96:
high speed backbone ATM switching, frame-to-ATM access and service and
open, flexible, scalable network management.

HIGH SPEED BACKBONE ATM SWITCHING

APEX-ADVANTAGE '96 specifies how GDC's existing APEX-DV2 and APEX-NPX
networks connect with even more powerful switching platforms such as GDC's
APEX-Strobos'. APEX-Strobos, to be formally announced in the latter half
of 1996, will provide such features as very high-speed cell switching,
high port densities, support for higher speed transport and sophisticated
carrier-oriented network management.

FRAME-TO-ATM ACCESS AND SERVICE

GDC differentiates itself from competitors by providing a unique high
density Frame Relay/Frame UNI to ATM interface in the APEX switching
family for Internet access and service providers. With User Selectable
Protocols for frame relay and Frame UNI on the same platform, GDC's
solutions are unsurpassed in protecting existing service provisioning
investments. GDC offers customers high-density frame relay and ATM
switching in a single platform, along with a smooth migration path to
frame UNI with a simple software download. This can substantially reduce
the cost of deployment for service providers wishing to offer multiple
services over a single backbone, especially as compared to a multiple
platform solution.

OPEN, FLEXIBLE, SCALABLE NETWORK MANAGEMENT

APEX-ProSphere' Network Management is a new suite of GDC APEX&#174 ATM
network management applications for cost-effective, virtually effortless
management of the network. Based on GDC's open, standards-based
architecture for network management, APEX-ProSphere currently includes: a
common management platform for alarms, events and diagnostics, allowing
easy isolation for network-wide fault conditions; a Service Provisioning
Manager to enable simple, graphical, end-to-end configuration of ATM and
higher layer services in the APEX network; the Routing Generation Manager
- a point-and-click application to automatically construct and download
cost-optimized routes for self-healing APEX ATM networks; and the APEX
Accounting Management System, the first system to provide usage-based
billing for public switched ATM services.

The GDC APEX family of ATM switches includes the APEX-DV2, an enterprise
switch for campus or private network environments, the APEX-NPX, designed
to meet the demanding requirements of telecommunications service
providers, and the Multi-Service Access Family (MAC, MAC1), designed to
extend the reach of ATM technology from the edge of an enterprise or
service provider's network to smaller workgroup and remote traffic
locations. GDC APEX is a scalable system that can easily and
cost-effectively be upgraded to accommodate network growth. Moreover, GDC
continues to develop voice over ATM and multimedia interfaces for the APEX
product line as outlined in earlier APEX-ADVANTAGE announcements, and will
be demonstrating these advanced service interfaces as part of the entire
APEX-ADVANTAGE '96 strategy during 1996.
