GDC AND ERICSSON INK NEW DEAL

ERICSSON TO PRIVATE LABEL THE GDC APEX ATM SWITCHES

LAS VEGAS, NV, USA --April 3, 1996 -- General DataComm, Inc. (NYSE-GDC) and
Ericsson Business Networks AB at this week's Networld+Interop Spring '96
show (Booth 5345), announced they signed a contract to private label the
GDC APEX family of ATM switches. The first phase of the contract
stipulates a need for approximately 200 edge switches.

GDC and Ericsson entered into a systems integration relationship in January
1995, which resulted in Ericsson supplying the APEX switches to Telia,
Sweden's national telephone operator. Ericsson will now include the APEX
product family into integrated solutions for other customers.

"Based on our good experience of the APEX product family," said Rolf
Johansson, Manager Network Design, Ericsson Business Networks AB, "we will
extend the relationship with GDC and include their ATM products in
integrated solutions, supporting data, voice and video applications. This
together with our total networking competence gives us a unique
opportunity on an expanding market."

"GDC has been ranked as the leader in the ATM market in Europe by
Dataquest," said Ross Belson, president, General DataComm. "The extension
of our relationship with Ericsson validates the Dataquest findings, as
well as attests to the strength of GDC's ATM product offerings."

The GDC APEX family of ATM switches includes the APEX-DV2, an enterprise
premises switch for campus or private network environments, the APEX-NPX,
designed to meet the demanding requirements of telecommunications service
providers, the Multi-Service Access Concentrators, designed to extend the
reach of ATM technology from the edge of an enterprise or service
provider's network to smaller workgroup and traffic locations. GDC APEX is
a scalable system that can easily and cost-effectively be upgraded to
accommodate network growth. Moreover, GDC continues to develop voice over
ATM and multimedia interfaces for the APEX product line as outlined in
earlier APEX-ADVANTAGE announcements, and will be demonstrating these
advanced service interfaces as part of the entire APEX-ADVANTAGE strategy
during 1996.

Ericsson offers a complete product portfolio for broadband networking,
including switching, access network, transport network and telecom
management systems. The network oriented solutions cover everything from
service development and operator business support to network design and
implementation. The APEX family will be part of such network solutions.

Ericsson's 85,000 employees are active in more than 100 countries. Their
combined expertise in switching, radio and networking makes Ericsson a
world leader in telecommunications.
