Gateway 2000 launches first complete PC ordering via the World Wide Web

"Build Your Own Gateway" leads industry in Internet commerce

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., April 23, 1996 - Gateway 2000, Inc. (NASDAQ: GATE)
announced today it is the first major manufacturer to provide consumers
the ability to custom configure, order and pay for a personal computer via
the World Wide Web.

"With thousands of new consumers going on-line every week, the Internet is
becoming the world's great new shopping mall," said Gateway Chairman and
CEO Ted Waitt. "Only the most flexible direct manufacturers will be able
to provide the levels of service demanded by these sophisticated PC
buyers. Gateway is proud to pioneer this level of service."

PC shoppers can access the company website at HTTP://WWW.GW2K.COM and
utilize the Build Your Own Gateway feature to design the system they want.
Buyers receive a price quote for their configuration and are able to
complete the entire transaction while on-line.

Special encryption methods build into the system address concerns about
credit card security. Response to the on-line order system has been
positive since it was made available through the website on April 10.

"PC customers have been clamoring for on-line ordering for some time and
Gateway 2000 is again first to deliver. We have made it easy for our
customers to order the exact PC they want in a convenient and comfortable
way," said Waitt.

In addition to building their own systems, customers can also check the
status of their orders on-line, as well as get tech tips and leave
messages for Gateway sales personnel to contact them concerning their
configurations.
